What To Expect From Golden Retriever Rescue Centers

Hundreds of golden retrievers gather in Golden for a special event

When you head to a golden retriever rescue center, expect to find a range of dogs that are identifiable as golden retrievers or golden retriever mixed breeds.

They will range in age from puppies to mature dogs and will have different levels of training and socialization.

The rescue center will provide the dogs with medical care, shelter, and training, and at the same time, look for suitable homes for each dog.

Expect the rescue center to ask you a number of questions to ensure you are ready to adopt a golden retriever. They will work with you and consider:

  • Whether your lifestyle will permit you to care for and spend quality time with a pet?
  • Whether you are prepared for the financial burden of caring for a dog for the next 10-15 years, including food, veterinary bills, and so forth?
  • Whether you have the facilities to keep a large dog like a golden retriever?

If you are a suitable candidate, they will then work with you to find the most suitable dog from the shelter for you to adopt.

Dont worry rescues will not place dangerous dogs, such as dogs that bite, in your home.

PRO TIP: If youre looking to adopt a Golden Retriever then you might want to talk to breeders. A reputable breeder will require the people who buy their puppies to return them if for any reason they are unable to continue caring for them. Reputable breeders will sometimes have dogs they are willing to adopt out.

Without further adieu. Heres our list of Golden Retriever rescues by state:

Is It Hard To Adopt A Golden Retriever Puppy

Golden retrievers are very desirable dogs, so puppies in rescues get adopted quickly.

However, because the demand is so high, there is also a steady supply of goldens available from breeders all over the US. Optimize your chances by registering with various rescues and being proactive about staying in touch.

What Are The Things To Consider When Adopting A Golden Retriever From A Rescue

When you are adopting a golden retriever from a rescue, you may be taking on a dog that has already been abandoned or inadequately cared for once.

The rescue center will want to be sure that you are prepared to take on the responsibility of a large dog, as they wont want to see the pup suffer neglect a second time.

Rescues will work to match you up with a dog that suits your lifestyle and wont match you up with a dog that has serious behavioral problems.

Your dog may well have habits and hangups from their previous owner, so be prepared to spend extra time training and socializing them.

Tips For Caring For Rescue Dogs

You might want to take a look at our new puppy checklist before bringing home your new puppy. While our list focuses on puppies youll find a lot of items youll also need for a rescue dog.

Unlike brand new pups adopted from responsible breeders, rescue dogs often come with behaviors and habits from their previous homes that may or may not be suitable for their new home with you.

There are a few things you can do to make your dog feel comfortable in your home quickly and start learning new house rules without delay.

Golden retrievers in particular are very intelligent pups and should have no problem adapting if you do a few smart things.

  • Dogs, like children, thrive on regularity, so create a schedule for them. Establish regular eating and exercise times, so they learn to know what to expect.
  • Reward your dog for correct behavior by treating them with food or play. Dont yell or punish. Your dog can develop a negative reaction to this, especially if they have been punished by previous owners.
  • Make sure everyone in the house is giving the same commands and following the same rules. It can be confusing for dogs when people use different commands for the same behavior, or when different behavior is acceptable with different members of the household.
  • If they are not house trained, have them sleep in a crate, but not alone. It is better to place the crate in someones room. They can stop sleeping in the crate when they can consistently hold it the whole night.

ARVADA, Colo. Eleven golden retrievers that were rescued from a farm in Kansas where they dealt with harsh conditions are looking for new forever homes.

The dogs are being cared for by The Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies in Arvada.

We were more than thrilled to jump in and help, said Kevin Shipley with GRRR.

Shipley said the 11 dogs had been void of contact with people, so it has taken a little while for them to get comfortable.

Three of the 11 dogs have found new homes, but eight still need to be adopted.

Are Golden Retrievers Expensive To Maintain

Golden retrievers can be relatively expensive to maintain, mostly because they are large dogs and, therefore, generally need to eat a fair amount.

They can also have steep medical bills when they get older as they are prone to a few medical conditions, such as joint issues and cataracts. You should probably expect to spend at least $1,000 a year maintaining a golden retriever.

Retriever Rescue Of Colorado

RROC was founded in 2006 by a group of volunteers experienced working with single-breed rescues who wanted to provide a shelter for all retrievers in the Colorado area. They started out with no budget and the ambition to save just 30 dogs a year. Today, they save more than 200 dogs annually.

RROC is located in the Evergreen area, and you can see some of the dogs available to adopt on their website, but you may have more luck if you contact the agency with your interest. This way, they can let you know when a likely pup becomes available.

You will need to complete an online adoption form, and when a dog becomes available, you will then be invited for a phone interview to see if you are an appropriate match. Before finalizing the match, a RROC volunteer will also make a home visit to make sure you have an appropriate forever home for the dog.

Expect to pay $400 to bring a RROC puppy home and a little less for adult dogs. Fees include spaying or neutering, microchipping, and all age-appropriate vaccinations.

No 2022 Cgrr Calendar

We know that many of you are eagerly awaiting our CGRR Calendar sneak peek. After 13 years of having what we feel is the best calendar ever, CGRR will not be having one this year. It has been a bit of a rough 3 months for Deb, as she started having episodes of rapid heartbeat, tachycardia, dizziness and just generally not feeling well. After 3 days in the hospital, having angiogram, cardiac MRI, echocardiogram and another test, we did find out that her heart is very healthy – which is a good thing, but what is causing the problem? The cardiologist feels it is anxiety related, but we wonder if it is an after effect from the COVID vaccine, as she had a bad reaction from her first shot – very similar to what is going on now. She is on a beta blocker, and anti-anxiety meds, which have helped, but we cannot seem to get things normalized.

This has been very frustrating for Deb. Anyone that knows her knows she is not a person to sit still. This has kind of knocked the wind out of her sails, and she has been told by her doctors to try to take it easy for a while.

Don’t get too down about missing the 2022 calendar. Calendar photos that were submitted this year are in a folder with Mary and will be used for the next calendar. Mary loves creating this work of art every year and she is excited to make next year’s calendar better than ever! Thanks for your support and understanding!

Why Adopt A Golden Retriever From A Rescue

While there are many breeders out there creating amazing little golden retriever puppies out there for you to buy, there are also hundreds of thousands of golden retrievers across the country that need adopting. This is for a variety of reasons.

  • First, Goldens are very popular pets, so there are unethical breeders out there creating puppies for which they cant find homes.
  • Second, many people adopt a gorgeous little pup, only to realize that they grow into a big, shedding dog that requires lots of care and attention. They decide that they simply dont want them anymore.
  • Many loving pet owners need to give up their pets due to a family member who has allergies, moving to a place that doesnt allow animals, moving abroad, or other unavoidable circumstances.
  • Sadly, there are also people who die and leave their pets behind with no-one to care for them, or they simply abandon them.

These are the golden retrievers that find themselves in rescue centers, waiting for new homes.

OUR EXPERIENCE: We had friends buy a Golden Retriever with all the best intentions. Unfortunately, they learned that owning a Golden Retriever did not fit their lifestyle and ended up putting their dog up for adoption.

Can Golden Retrievers Be Left Alone

Golden retrievers are very social dogs and they dont like to be left alone for long periods of time.

They are also highly intelligent, which means they are smart enough to get into trouble if you leave them with nothing to do for hours on end.

Every golden is different, but as a general rule, they should only be left alone for a maximum of eight hours at a time.

What Is A Golden Retriever Rescue For Adoption

The Golden Retriever is known for being loyal and trustworthy. Unfortunately, some owners of Golden Retrievers or other life circumstances can be less than trustworthy. As a result, these dogs can end up being homeless and abandoned. Theyre either left to fend for themselves on the streets as strays or are placed in cages in less-than-ideal shelters.

A Golden Retriever rescue shelter takes a different approach than letting them roam alone. These operations are committed to the rescue, rehabilitation, and re-homing of Golden Retrievers. They most often provide needed medical care to meet an immediate need or prevent further complications that the Golden Retriever may be facing.

Through the intentional work of the staff and volunteers at these shelters, dogs are given a second chance at life and families are able to welcome in a new friend.

With a rescue thats specific for Golden Retrievers, the staff is often better equipped to provide insight and information about the specific breeds temperament and personality. Many of the volunteers also have Golden Retrievers or are familiar with dogs as they provide helpful insight as you adopt your own dog.

As choosing a breeder isnt always the best option for everyone, rescues can provide an amazing opportunity for families to save a dogs life. This is mainly because Golden Retriever rescues are already grown-up adults over the age of 2 years old. They have passed their puppy dog phase and make great companions!
