Materials Need For Dog Drawing

How to Draw a Labrador Retriever dog (NARRATED) Step by Step

You do not need much for a colored pencil drawing, which is the style we will be doing in this tutorial. This guide covers drawing using colored pencils and requires very little for you to get started. In this case, the drawing began with a single sheet of paper, colored pencils, and a few select pieces of pastel chalk. This is an effective way to create an easy dog drawing. If you would like to learn how to draw a dog, or perhaps another subject, this list of materials will help you get started:

  • Archival, natural white, acid-free paper, like this pad from Canson.
  • KOH-I-NOOR colored pencils, which are useful for priming large areas.
  • KOH-I-NOOR pastel chalkpieces, which allow for drawing in layers and also for creating the structure of the coat.
  • A white marker pen, such as this one by Faber-Castell. It is used for adding fine details like reflections and creating tangibly realistic fur.
  • A drawing/blending stump to soften and create blended transitions between areas, as well as to define the structure of the coat.
  • A putty eraser can be shaped for use in erasing larger areas and tiny details too. Remember that you will not be able to erase darker shades of color.
  • A pencil eraser, which is an essential tool. This solid eraser is useful in the creation of bold lines, making small alterations, or slightly lightening specific areas. This will not erase darker colors, however, so keep that in mind.

Grid step

You can the base construction lines and start drawing on tracing paper or you can draw the grid layout yourself using the following stepsShow more

1) Draw a rectangle that will define the conditional proportions and boundaries of the chosen drawing.2) From the middle of the rectangle, draw one vertical and one horizontal line equally dividing the shape.3) Draw another horizontal line equally dividing the upper half of the rectangle. Similarly, draw a horizontal line equally dividing the bottom half of the rectangle.4) Draw a vertical line equally dividing the left half of the rectangle. Similarly, draw a vertical line equally dividing the right half of the rectangle.

Step 1

Step 2

Add lines for the body shape and a snout with an open mouth. Draw a new guideline for the body.

Step 3

With smooth lines, delineate a neck. Draw guidelines for the legs.

Step 4

Outline the shapes of the legs.

Step 5

Draw a tail and the foreleg that the puppy is sitting on. Define the shape of the face.

Step 6

Add toes, ears and eyes. Mark, with a semicircle, the shape of the mouth.

Step 7

Work on the whole figure, paying attention to details.

Step 8

Contour the golden retriever puppy, trying to vary the thickness and blackness of the line. Draw more details and the ground. Erase all guidelines.

Draw The Outline Of The Dogs Head

Before you draw anything else draw a vertical line that will be the middle of the dogs head and draw a horizontal line intersecting with it. Try and place the horizontal line on the level that you want to have the dogs eyes at. The point of the vertical line is to help make sure that both sides of the dogs head are even and the horizontal line will later help you place other features such as the ears and eyes on the same level.

Start the head drawing by first sketching out the overall rough shape of the dogs head . In this case the shape will be somewhat similar to an egg but with a less rounded bottom.

How To Draw A Dog

Please PAUSE the “How to Draw a Dog ” video after each step to draw at your own pace.

For the first few steps, don’t press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw two circles as guides for the first part of the golden retriever’s body. First draw four small marks for the height and width of the circle, then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it’s easy to erase if you make a mistake. But the circles don’t have to be perfect. They’re just guides.

If you do want perfect circles, trace the outer rim of a coin, a bottle cap or any other object with a circular edge. The circle on the right should be smaller than the one on the left, and their edges should touch. Place the circle on the right slightly higher so that the top edges of both circles are at the same level.

Step 2: Draw another circle on the top, left side as a guide for the golden retriever’s head. Draw this circle the same way. First draw four marks that indicate the height and width, then connect the marks using curved lines. The edges of the circles should touch. This circle should be a bit smaller than the body circle on the right.

Step 3: Draw a curved horizontal line across the golden retriever’s head. This is a construction line that will help you place the dog’s facial features later. Add a curved vertical line on the top left side of the head for another construction line.

Next Draw The Hair Around The Eyes

How to Draw Golden Retriever Puppy printable step by step ...

Remember to always look closely at the reference photo and observe how the fur is arranged and growing. Start at the root of the hair and draw outward the way the fur grows. This gives you a sharp line at the end of the hairs and makes the hair look more natural.

You dont need to use the same colors I use, these are just guidelines. I use Prismacolor pencils and if you use different pencils the colors will be slightly different, but youll still be able to succssfully draw this portrait.

I use a variety of colors to build up the layers; Cream, Rose Peach, Sienna Brown, Beige, Light Umber, Chocolate, Goldenrod, and Dark Brown.

Drawing The Face & Ears

I continue drawing the hair by marking the lightest areas with White.

Then I begin building up layers with lighter colors such as Light Umber, Beige, Peach, Sand, and Goldenrod, working from light to dark. In the darker areas, I use Light Umber, Chocolate, and Dark brown.

I continue layering those colors, but if I see another color in the reference photo, I add it as I work.

In addition, I keep drawing hair-like strokes in the direction the fur grows.

I lay in the darkest areas in the ear with Sepia and Light Umber. I wash the whole ear with Sand using a light touch.

Next I use White in the highlighted areas of the ear to create depth. Then I use a wash of Beige before going over the ear again with layers of Sepia and Light Umber to create more shadows.

With each layer, I draw more details in the ear, repeating the same process with the colors mentioned until I am finished.

I also added Peach, Sienna Brown, Chocolate, Dark Brown, and Burnt Ochre.

When the ear is finished, I move to the other side of the face and ear using the same method and colors.

Continue checking the reference photo as you work, and look for the color placement and apply colors accordingly.

From Photo To Drawing

Let us begin by introducing you to a pastel chalk drawing of Bert the Pug. Here, we can take a closer look at the methods used in the drawing process.

Starting with a pencil, Berts lines and shading were lightly sketched. We then work methodically from the top left quadrant to the top right, which prevents the pastel-filled area from being smudged while drawing. Pastel chalk is extremely fragile, so be gentle with your grip and the amount of pressure you apply when working with it. One exception was that both ears were drawn together, as the same drawing methods and colors were applied to each of them.

Tip: If you are right-handed, protect the right ear from being smudged later on while drawing . You can use wax paper or cellophane placed over the area.

Berts ears were both pre-hatched using black pastel chalk. We then took to widen the color dynamic with some additional grey tones. As the area we are working with is rather large, you can use your fingertip to blur colors and fill in the white regions, which will also soften the tone.

Adding Features With Simple Shapes

Now we will go in and draw the more detailed features of the dog. Even the smaller parts of a dog that appear complex can be loosely captured with a combination of shapes and lines. Lets break down each feature into simple silhouettes while thinking about the end effect.

Parts of the head

First, capture the shape of the jaw. Draw the dogs snout roughly in the shape of a skewed rectangle, then add a line to separate the upper and lower parts. A golden retrievers snout has sagging skin and an upturned mouth that gives the impression of a smile. It also features a sudden drop at the corners of the mouth. When viewed from the side, the snout should be divided by an S-shape in the lower part of the skewed rectangle.

When drawing the snout from the front, draw a gentle W-shaped line. In the middle of the line, draw another line connecting up to the nose. Make sure the corners of the mouth line arch out.

The golden retrievers eyes are a little droopy, which also makes them look friendly and gentle. Draw the eyes in a triangle so that you can capture the droopy shape.

The ears attach to the back of the head and flop down towards the front. Try to capture the sagging appearance of the ears with triangles or squares that cover the sides of the dogs face.

Parts of the body

Once all of the body parts are in place, start rounding the straight lines and corners. The lifelike silhouette is now completed.

Getting The Eyes Right

How to almost draw a Golden Retriever

I usually always start with the eyes. If they are not right then the rest of the drawing wont be either.

The reference photo shows reflections of the window and shadows in the eye. I want to try to convey this in my drawing, so I start by placing those highlights with White.

Then I start layering Sienna Brown, Chocolate, Light Umber, and Dark Brown into each eye using a sharp point and light pressure to build up the layers slowly. I outline the eye and draw the pupil with Black, and use Blue Slate in the highlights.

To finish the eye, I use Greyed Lavender, White, and 70% French Grey around the eye.

How to Draw a Golden Retriever printable step by step ...

To draw the mouth of the golden retrievers mouth, you have to be a bit prominent.

  • First, draw a curved line to make it as the line of the forehead. Draw two little circles as the eyes a bit downwards from the first curve.
  • Now draw two curves in opposite directions beside the two eyes to make the nose of the dog. Add two triangular shaped ears from the end of the first curved line.
  • Now its time to draw the mouth on the face. Draw a curved line that will start from the side of the ears and will end up almost at the middle portion of the forehead line.
  • Again draw a small curve from the endpoint of it and join it with the ear of that side. Now draw a small line in between the big and small curve and it will demark the face.
  • Draw the nose on the place a little upper of the mouth and the face of the golden retriever is complete.
