What To Look For In Kibble

Read the label. Look for a food that has a protein as the first ingredient, not a grain. The best kibbles have a single source of protein, such as lamb or chicken. Grain-free diets exist, but carbohydrates are required for energy, and the choice of grain is important since some dogs have sensitivities to wheat, corn, or soybeans.

Frozen Raw: Buying Complete Food

For beginners, nutritionists recommend buying a complete raw food. This means its premade and already balanced with all the vitamins and minerals that your dog needs to thrive.

There are plenty of complete raw food brands available on the market, but Id recommend checking your local community groups first. There are often excellent boutique raw food suppliers, who collaborate with your local butcher or grocer to source high quality ingredients. Not only will buying locally ensure youre supporting these local businesses, but it will also reduce your carbon pawprint.

Most commercial raw food comes in frozen packets with daily serving suggestions for both puppies and adult dogs. You need to thaw and use the food within specific time frames. Because of this, ensure you have a freezer to store it in. Keep the raw food on a designated shelf in the refrigerator whilst thawing, so you know theres no risk of contamination.

Golden Retriever Puppy Nutrient Needs

The Golden Retriever is a large breed puppy who suffers with both hip and elbow dysplasia, so it is important that you feed him a puppy formula that is specifically designed for large breeds. Not only will these formulas contain all the nutrients that puppies need to grow into a healthy adult, but they will contain the optimum levels of calcium and phosphorus to ensure that his bones grow at the correct rate to avoid such health issues.

His Golden coat also needs looking after, so plenty of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are important in the ingredients list, so be sure to look out for fish, flaxseed, fish oils and chia seeds. Not only will this keep his locks glowing, but these ingredients also have a wide range of benefits for brain function, bone health and eye development such as Docosahexaenoic Acid .

A large puppy should be fed a high-quality kibble that will provide him with a protein content of at least 26% but ideally towards 30%, and a fat content of at least 9%. Calcium should be around 1.5%, and do not be tempted to feed your Golden calcium supplements because any more than what is in his kibble will be far too much and will be harmful for his skeletal development. The amount you feed him will be dependent on his weight, so be sure to follow the package instructions as all kibbles are different.

What To Look For In A Good Golden Retriever Food

Raw Food / BARF For Dogs.Golden Retriever BARF/RAW diéta ...

To ensure that your Golden Retrievers basic nutritional needs are met, its best to choose a large-breed dog food formulated for her life stage.

Here are some other things to look for when choosing a good dog food for your Golden Retriever:

  • Wholesome, natural ingredients with no fillers, byproducts, or artificial additives
  • Rich in lean protein from high-quality animal sources like poultry, meat, and fish
  • Limited fat and calorie content to control growth in puppies and maintain lean mass in adults
  • Controlled calcium and phosphorus levels with glucosamine and chondroitin for joint health
  • Nutritionally complete and balanced formulas, according to AAFCO nutrient profiles

Besides making sure your Golden Retrievers food meets these requirements, you should also check to see if it comes in a bigger kibble size. Large and deep-chested breeds have a high risk for bloat which is exacerbated by eating too fast or eating too much at oncebigger kibble means that your dog gets the same nutrition in smaller portion sizes.

How Much Bone In Your Dogs Raw Food

The amount of bone in your dogs raw diet doesnt have to be exact. But if you like hard numbers, then heres some simple math to determine the percentage of bone in your dogs raw diet:

Adult dogs: 12/ Percentage in food = % of diet

Puppies: 15/ Percentage in food = % of diet

Example math: If you go to the grocery store and find chicken necks, you know from the above table that theyre 42% bone. If you want to feed your dog 12% bone, then the calculation looks like:

12/42 x 100 = 29%

So 29% should be chicken necks. So you can feed chicken necks every third meal to make it easy, or you can eyeball it and make chicken necks look like 1/3 of the diet. The math looks exact, but you dont have to be all that exact with calcium. Just make sure you get 10% to 15%.

What Our Golden Retriever Puppy Eats | RAW DOG FOOD!?

Animal protein is still the best.

The amino acid profile of animal proteins is more complete than their plant counterparts. Ideally, you should aim for a protein content that is at least 25% of the dry matter weight of the dog food.

Also, the very first ingredient must be a clearly stated animal protein. In some cases where a plant ingredient is first on the list, these are often treated as special diets. You still have to look at the guaranteed analysis of the product.

The Dark Side Of Kibble

In the 1990s, trace amounts of phenobarbital, the drug used to euthanize dogs, were discovered in some commercial pet foods. The FDA investigated but couldnt determine the type of animal the tainted meat was coming from.

Other investigations in different countries have suggested its very likely there are dog and cat meat in pet food

There is plenty of evidence to suggest that euthanized animals, roadkill and diseased livestock enter our pets food. This famous article offers a close-up look at an American rendering plant and explains how these animals can end up in our pets food.

Even the former president of the AAFCO admitted on camera that theres no way of telling what animals are in commercial pet food. Vague ingredient names like meat and bone meal could be a cover for dog meat making it into dogs kibble.

Does this mean you should avoid all commercial kibble? No. But just because a big-name brand is sold at a big-name store, that doesnt mean its always trustworthy.

If you feed your dog kibble, find a high-quality local brand that names every ingredient on the label. Look for clear protein sources and avoid food with common allergens like wheat and corn. High-quality kibble will also contain fewer filler ingredients like rice. Fillers add calories without adding nutritional value. Your dog can do without them.

Feeding A Golden Retriever Adult Dog

Commercial Golden Retriever foods can be moist, semi moist or dry. Goldens need several different quality animal proteins indicated by the words meat, fish or poultry meal.

Dry foods help to keep teeth and gums healthy but is a processed food. A high quality kibble should contain 25-30% protein but should not be the only food fed to your dog. Variety ensures that your Golden retriever dog food supplies all the nutrients required by your dog.

Feeding a Golden Retriever with a natural home made diet can be time consuming and difficult to balance the nutrients. Before you commence a natural diet you should research this well and consult with your vet. The best diet for Golden Retrievers must still be supplemented with fresh foods such as raw ground beef, turkey, chicken, cottage cheese, yogurt and finely chopped/ processed vegetables.

Feeding a Golden Retriever cheap food can make them prone to skin allergies and chronic infections related to a poor quality diet.

Remember that cheap Retriever dog food will contain meat by-products, fillers, dairy, soy, eggs, corn, wheat, multiple cereals, artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. These are all additives that can have a negative impact on your Goldens health and exacerbate allergies and Golden Retriever shedding.

Understanding The Dietary Needs Of Golden Retrievers

Golden Retrievers are usually very active, especially as puppies and young adults. Young dogs will need plenty of calories.

This is especially true if you intend to do things together such as agility, rally, playing frisbee, hiking, or one of the fifty other things that Golden Retrievers love to do with their people.

As your dog gets older its natural that he will start to slow down. If he begins to look a little pudgy at this time, you can cut back on his portions a little or consider changing foods to a dog food made for mature adult dogs. These foods typically have slightly fewer calories but still let a dog feel full.

Remember that your Golden will stay healthier throughout his lifetime if you keep him active, even when hes older. Daily walks are great and so are regular runs.
