Are Golden Retrievers Calmer Than Labs

Lets Talk About The Fur

Both Labradors and Golden Retrievers have:

  • A soft and thick undercoat that keeps the dog toasty during the cold winter
  • An oily and coarse overcoat which is resistant to water

Golden Retrievers have a water-repellent coat while Labradors have a water-resistant coat.

In addition to that, Goldies have a long and luscious coat while Labradors usually have a shorter coat which needs less maintenance.

Labrador Retriever And Obesity

Any Lab owner will tell you just how food orientated this breed is.

They LOVE to eat.

Unfortunately, their love of food can cause many health issues.

The Labrador Retriever is genetically prone to obesity.

Genetic factors leaves the Labrador genetically predisposed to excessive weight gain, increased appetite and obesity.

This genetic mutation is only common in Labradors and is not found in other dog breeds.

How To Calm Your Golden Retriever Down

Behavior modification is the most important step in training a dog how to be calm. In a sense, the brain needs to be retrained to be calm in the presence of a stressor and to switch off of anxiety as a default setting. Behavior modification can take weeks of desensitization and classical conditioning exercises.

Temperature & Environment: Where Do Labs And Goldens Thrive

With both breeds, it is important to know that temperature will affect them because of the thick coats they have.

Well explain a bit more about this later so that you have a better understanding, but to keep things short, both breeds have two layers of their coat one of which is shed in warmer conditions.

So, if you have a home in a particularly warm area they might shed more often throughout the year compared to someone who lives in a colder area where that double layer of insulation is needed.

Similarly, both breeds will do well in any type of house and, of course, theyd prefer environments full of love and affection, but there are a few health concerns that, if your dog has, could be exacerbated by certain elements in your home.

For Example: If you have a lot of stairs in your home, this could be a problem down the line with a Labrador Retriever which has malformed elbows and knees. It could also be a problem down the line if you have a Golden Retriever with hip dysplasia.

These are some things to keep in mind, but that usually does not become relevant until your dog has reached its older years.

Females Tend To Be Calmer

Pin on VickiVaLabLover

This was going to be our first dog, so we wanted to go with a female because we had heard from other dog owners that females tend to be calmer and less hyper than males.

In general, both male and female Golden Retrievers have a calm and friendly temperament and are not considered to be a hyperactive breed.

Female dogs generally mature mentally faster than males do.  A 1-year-old female acts like a 1 1/2 2-year-old male. Males have a longer puppy stage.

While Goldens reach their full height at the age of 1, and their mature weight at the age of 2, their mental maturity is not reached until the age of 3.

Golden Retrievers are slow to mature compared to other breeds, and they display that playful silly personality of a puppy sometimes into their senior years.

As far as females being calmer than males, who really knows? It is like saying that all women are calmer than men. This is simply not true.

I can tell you this, my female puppy was not calm. She was so hyper and full of energy and playfulness that she was hard to keep up with, and definitely a handful.

I remember a time when she was so wild my husband had to lock himself in the bedroom just to get away from her until she calmed down. . He is the one that has always roughhoused with her from the start, and I guess the one time he just couldnt take it LOL.

The joys of puppyhood! I would say she calmed down quite a bit at the age of 1, she was spayed at around 6 months and that helped.

When Do Labs Calm Down

Imagine an active, boisterous Labrador playing and running all over the house. You might find him playing with every object, jumping over furniture and even bumping into people every time. In these kinds of situations, you might want your Lab to calm down a bit.

One common question that Labrador owners, especially new Labrador owners ask me is, When do Labs calm down? They ask me, do they ever calm down? If so, at what age do Labradors calm down?

This article answers you everything regarding, when do Labradors calm down, and we also provide you with different techniques and solutions to calm down your Labrador.

Labs Vs Goldens Health

All purebred breeds like the Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever can have inherited health problems. Here are a few you need to look out for.

Both dogs have high cancer risk, can suffer from obesity, have hip and elbow dysplasia, eye disease or ear infections. The cancer risk is higher in Goldens than Labs with over 60% of the dogs developing cancer during their lifetime. Labs are more prone to obesity than Goldens so its important that they get a lot of exercise and their weight is managed. Comparing the two dogs, Labs may be the healthier breed as much of their health problems can be avoided by testing.

With The Labrador Its A Little Different And They Are Classed Into Two Categories Only

The American Labrador is the working class dog. They are less sturdy than the show dogs. If youre looking for a companion with super high energy levels and are athletic, look no further.

British Labradors are the show dogs. They are bred with looks and temperament in mind. They are much milder but still very active, but are more suitable to be a house pet.

Labrador Retriever Vs Golden Retriever Breeders

Whether you are choosing a Lab or Golden Retriever breeder, your criteria should be very similar.

A reputable breeder should willingly provide you with health information about both parent dogs.

Including results of health screenings, vet checks, and evidence of them.

The breeder should also readily provide you with past references, an initial health guarantee , as well as a take-back guarantee if the new puppy isnt a good fit.

They should also have a record of required immunizations and a willingness to stay in contact to answer any questions you may have.

Are Male Or Female Golden Retrievers Better

This is really based on what you want in a dog. Both are similar in temperament but the biggest difference is their size. The males are slightly larger than the females so you need to take into consideration how much space you have and what your needs are. Males also tend to be slightly more aggressive and territorial than females.

Method 1 Of 4:checking The Body Structure

  • 1View the size of the dog. Golden Retrievers are medium-sized dogs. • 2Check the ears. Golden Retrievers have rather short ears. The front edges are attached behind and just above the eyes.XResearch source The tips fall close to the dog’s cheeks and, if pulled over, should cover the eyes.XResearch source
  • 3Look at the eyes. A Golden Retriever’s eyes are medium-large, and they can be either medium or dark brown with dark eye rims.XResearch source They give the dog an intelligent, friendly expression.
  • 4See the dog’s tail. The tail of a Golden Retriever is thick and muscular at the base. It is carried level or moderately curved upward, though never curled or between the legs.XResearch source

Megora said:If you keep the dogs inside, don’t neuter/spay, bathe frequently, blow dry, etc…. dogs will smell just fine. Mine usually smell like my lotions .Issue is that every golden that I’ve met who is owned by the average pet owner their coats are terrible. This is because they were neutered too early, are kept outside any prolonged amount of time, sleep in damp mud room, and are rarely to never bathed and groomed.Their coats will smell funky when they have been outside – wet dog smell, even if they’re not wet. That will fade away a few minutes after they’ve been inside. In general – any dog will have a doggy smell. Most retriever breeds absolutely. But it won’t be the really gross smell or feel of a dog that needs a lot of TLC.

So At What Age Do Labs Calm Down

    Randomness: November 2009

After reading the age-wise behavior of a Labrador, you might have got an idea, when do lab puppies calm down. Yes, you can notice that Labs calms down a bit during the mature adult stage.

This means that your Lab will calm down anywhere between 2 to 3 years of age.

But when anyone asks, when will my Lab calm down exactly?, there is no exact age number to answer. As every Labrador is different, and there exist various factors that determine the calming age of your dog. For example, my first Labrador seemed to calm down and got settled as it reached its second birthday. But my other Lab which is almost 2 years old is nowhere in the mood to calm down.

Some dogs do not calm down even at their senior stages of life. They seem to be hyper all their life. Why dont these Labs calm down even after being a senior? If this is your case, you might be thinking, when will my Lab settle down?

These kinds of cases are different and here, you need to differentiate between a normal energetic dog and a hyper dog. Yes, there exists a difference.

    Grooming Requirement Of Labs

The Labrador Retriever also has a coat that is double layered. Their coat also has undercoat that is soft which warms the Labs during cold temperature.

Also, their undercoat also shed during warm weather like the Golden Retriever. However, the top coat of Labs is comparably shorter unlike to that of the Goldies.

The Labrador Retriever do not need trimmings on their neck, ear areas, and tails due to absence of feathering fur on those areas. But, their coat of double layered demands for a regular maintenance.

Their grooming essentials include a rake for the undercoat. This is for the purpose of dead hair removal from that part. Also included is a slicker brush and sometimes a simple dog comb for the final grooming touches.

The coat of the Labrador Retriever do not also needs any shaving. Their basic grooming habit must includes nail cutting and cleaning of ears.

Compared to the Goldies, the Labs demand for lesser bath. Moreover, their coats are also lesser maintaining during non shedding season.

How To Calm A Dog Down In The Car

Some Labs are happy to spend a road trip asleep in the trunk. Others dont seem to be able to settle.

Sometimes its because theyve learned to associate car trips with a really exciting destination the beach for example and theyre excited.

These dogs might benefit from something calming and productive to occupy their time, like a favorite plush toy or blanket.

Or, since Labs are remarkably quick at learning landmarks, covering their travel crate in a blanket might keep them guessing your route until youve reached the end.

Other times, Labs can be unsettled in the car because car sickness is making them feel uncomfortable and anxious.

Weve written more about how to cope with that scenario .

    History Of The Labrador Retriever

The Labrador was bred for similar reasons to the Golden Retriever, but more focused on waterfowl hunting. This sporting breed came about when owners in Britain wanted to improve upon the now extinct St. Johns Water-Dog. The St. Johns Water Dog was an excellent fishing dog for icy Canadian waters, pulling in fishing nets for their owners. When British duck hunters saw the love for water found in these breeds, they wanted to improve upon it and make them exceptional waterfowl retrievers. Thus, the Labrador Retriever was born.

    Golden Vs Labrador Health Problems

Because both Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers are insanely popular as pets, working field dogs and show dogs.

However, these two purebred dog breeds are each associated with certain known breed-specific health issues.

Debatably the Golden Retriever has more concerning health issues than the Labrador, so lets take a closer look at what they are and how we can prevent them, if at all.

So now, lets take a look at the major health problems associated with each dog breed.

    Golden Retrievers Are More Patient

Both breeds are friendly, affectionate and loyal dogs. They are both very sociable and have wonderful temperaments.

It is not by chance that they are Americas most popular family pets.

When comparing a Golden Retriever vs Labrador, the Golden is a gentler, more patient and sensitive dog.

Golden Retrievers have a gentle nature that shines throughout their interaction with young children. They are very careful and soft.

Labrador Retrievers are also great with children but they are typically more excitable and bouncy.

The Golden Retriever enjoys a calm and quiet environment. Whereas Labradors do not tire out easily and are always ready to play as soon as you are!

Labradors are not known to be sensitive.

Golden Retrievers are wonderful dogs!  But do male goldens differ from female goldens?  In this article male vs female Golden Retriever, you will find out how the two sexes differ, plus the reasons why I chose a female.

Just over 4 years ago my husband and I decided to get a puppy. We had recently moved into our new house and wanted to add a dog to our family of just the two of us.

I have always loved Golden Retrievers, and we decided that was the breed for us. After researching, we were able to find a reputable breeder that was going to have puppies available in a couple of months. That was a great time frame for us, and our next decision had to be gender. Well, if you have children, then this is great news!

When it comes to dogs, specifically, a canine companion in the home can encourage more daily steps across all family members.

The animals can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and keep all family members moving doing the cold and dreary months of winter.

What Is The Best Golden Retriever Mix

The best Golden Retriever mix is really based on what you want in a dog. Some mixes might be better served with an active couple that already has dogs or cats in their home while other mixes work better for retired couples with no other pets for children. Its important that you find a dog with a personality and traits that work best for your needs. The golden retriever and Cocker Spaniel mix is the most popular bringing all the traits of a golden retriever with a slightly smaller size.

Play: How Do They Do With Other Dogs

If you already have an older dog at home, or you enjoy taking your dog out to parks and making doggy dates with friends, you may be worried about how Labrador or Golden Retrievers get along with other dogs.

Both breeds will play well with other dogs and are friendly around them especially if you take the time to properly introduce them, you make it a point to introduce them when theyre young, and you keep up on their training.

Who Is A Golden Retriever Best For

Realistically, Golden Retrievers are best for people who want a loving, kind, gentle dog. This breed is especially best for people who work structured hours, dont end up staying late at the office too often and can get home to give care to their pup.

Families with children and existing pets like other dogs or cats would also do best with a Golden Retriever. Retired couples who are still active would do well to invest in this breed. Just make sure that you have it tested for any pre-existing genetic conditions.

    Exercise & Living Conditions

The Goldador will need at least 60 minutes of intense exercise every day. If you cannot commit to this high level of activity, you should either pick another dog breed or hire a dog walker. Traditional working dogs, which both of his parents are, need daily exercise without fail. And without it, he will become unruly and problematic.

Unfortunately, this is a big reason why both of his parents end up in rescue centers because people come to realize that they cannot provide them with the exercise that they need. The Goldador doesnt stay a cute and cuddly Andrex puppy forever, and hell soon grow up to be an energetic workaholic.

When he is a puppy, his exercise shouldnt be too intense, because you need to protect his joints from heavy impact as he develops. Instead, stick to long walks and swimming. As he becomes more sturdy, he makes a great jogging partner, frisbee catcher, or agility course participant.

The Goldador has an intelligent brain, and as such, you need to vary his exercise routine. Hell quickly become bored with daily walks. Especially if you dont take him swimming or to the local doggy park to catch up with his friends.

He also needs daily playtime in the yard to keep his mind stimulated. You can join him in his fun and games, or you can leave him to it if he has plenty of toys to entertain himself with. But being a needy pooch, hell be much happier if you join in the fun.

    Types Of Golden Retrievers

There are a few different types of Golden Retrievers you can choose between:

    • British
    • American
    • Canadian

All three share the same risk of health problems, very similar traits as listed above. The main difference is in the size and the coat.

    • British Golden Retrievers

British Golden Retrievers are usually known for their:

    • Slightly larger and more muscular build compared to the American Canadian
    • Light golden to white coat color

Overall, they share a lot of similarities with other Golden Retrievers, but

    • American Golden Retrievers

American Golden Retrievers are usually known for their:

    • Slightly darker coats

Canadian Golden Retrievers are usually known for their:

    • Thinner coats

What Is The Best Lab Mix

This is really based on what you want. Consider the yard you have and the amount of space you have for a dog, how much attention you can give them and so on before you determine which lab mix would best fit what you have to offer. The Goldador is one of the most common lab mixes, a cross between a Labrador and a Golden Retriever and is the most popular dog for search and rescue or guide dogs. Another popular option is the Labradoodle which is a mix between a Labrador and a poodle, one that sheds less and is smaller perfect for those with allergies or smaller homes.

    Grooming Requirement Of Goldies

    Obi

The coat of the Goldies is in medium length and double coated. It has an outer coat that repels water and an undercoat that has foamy-like texture.

Moreover, their neck, leg areas, and tail have fur that looks like feathers. Their coats grow longer and smoother.

Their foamy coats are very much loved by most dog owners. However, some attest that their coat should be in a moderate length as they are hunting dogs.

The Goldies demand for grooming on a regular basis. Further, during a cold temperature, the Goldies undercoat are denser, while under warm temperature, they shed.

In addition, you must include a high-quality brush in your Goldies essentials for their top coat maintenance. However, combs with steel tooth may also do.

The recommended brushing schedule if a Golden Retriever is more than one session per week. Basically, trimming of fur by the use of scissors or shear thinners is also a grooming requirement.

Moreover, their coat do not require any shaving. In addition to their grooming requirements include bathing, nail cuttings, cleaning of the ear and teeth.

This is very important especially ear cleaning for dogs with dropped ear. They are more likely to acquire infections.
