What Is An English Cream Golden Retriever

The English Cream Golden Retriever is a variety of this breed. One of its principal characteristics is its thinner coat versus the standard Golden Retriever, but they are the same breed. What is remarkable about this dog is its light cream color. People breed these dogs mainly in the United Kingdom and Europe.

You may be amazed to know that the English Golden Retriever is not a rare or exotic variety. The variety is very popular and familiar in many households in Europe and the United Kingdom. At first glance, its light coat is one of the main differences that make it stand out from the American variety. But, the rest of its characteristics are pretty similar to the traditional Golden Retriever. Read on to learn more about this adorable, noble, and beloved pet variety.

The English Cream Golden Retriever is a variety of Golden Retriever with a much lighter coat. That is why people also call it the White Golden Retriever.

Apart from this difference in coat color, we can say that it has no significant differences with the American Golden Retriever. It is a dog with the same friendly character, reaches a similar size, and needs practically the same care.

Brief History Of American Golden Retrievers

All Golden Retrievers, whether they are American, Canadian, or English, originated in Scotland in 1868 where they were used as superior hunting dogs by sportsmen. The first goldens were registered with the British Kennel Club in 1903. Back then, they were listed as flat-coat goldens. The breed didn’t become popular in the U.S. until the 1920s when anything British was cherished, including dog breeds. In 1932, the American Kennel Club officially recognized the breed.

Are White Golden Retrievers Rare

No.Those who are looking for a “white” or “platinum” golden retriever will be disappointed. While some Goldens may appear very light in color, they are not actually white. The color white doesn’t genetically appear in this breed. Any ad offering “rare white golden retriever puppies” should be interpreted as a scam! Terms like “white,””platinum,””rare,” or even “English Cream” are marketing words used to trick buyers into paying more for an ordinary retriever with a lighter coat color.

A “white” golden is also frowned upon by both British and American kennel clubs. Any amount of light-colored hair is considered a fault and will be penalized.

English cream golden retriever puppies tend to darken in color as they grow.

Whats The Difference Between Labs And Golden Retrievers

Before golden retrievers were recognized as a subtype of the retriever breed, labradors became one of the most popular dogs in the world. Now that we know there is a difference in personality and appearance between English cream golden retrievers and English labs, the question is: How exactly do you tell the difference?

The best way to tell the difference between a labrador retriever and a golden retriever is its body shape: A labrador has a broad head with a short yet wide snout. Its coat is short, sleek, and typically only comes in white, beige, brown, or black. Golden retrievers have smaller heads, narrow and long snouts, and long fluffy and feathery coats in white, beige, red, and honey.

But in terms of personality, attitude, and overall temperament, what is it that sets golden retrievers apart from labrador retrievers?

Labradors and golden retreivers are obedient, loyal, and trainable dogs perfect for any family, but many experienced dog owners conclude that goldens are more sensitive than labs. Goldens tend to be gentle, soft, generally good-natured, and patient.

Learn more aboutthe difference between golden and labrador retrievers.

It comes down to preference and which breed you think would work better for you and your family. But if youre looking for an English cream golden retriever that is full of love, patience, and endless snuggles, be sure you get one from expert breeders who treat their dogs like their own family.

Origin Of Golden Retrievers

Duff

The first known Golden Retrievers came from Scotland in the mid-1800s. Baron Tweedmouth of Guisachan was one of the first breeders of this breed.

Another interesting aspect that we know is that the Golden Retriever was born from the crossing of two breeds. The two breeds were the Wavy Coated Retriever and the Tweed Water Spaniel, both extinct today. As a result of this crossbreeding, the first four puppies of traditional Golden Retrievers and English Cream Golden Retrievers were born.

The American line of Golden Retrievers first arrived from Canada. Although physical and genetic changes have occurred in the dog over the years, the original line remains intact. So when you hear American Golden Retriever or English Cream Golden Retriever, dont think they are two different breeds.

Breeders & Puppy Costs

The English Cream Golden Retriever is a Golden Retriever that is bred to the KC breed standard. Although there are more American Golden Retrievers in America, a handful of breeders will breed English Cream Goldens to the British standard. A reputable breeder will import English Cream Golden Retrievers from the very best breeders in Europe, and strictly produce English Creams.

They will be able to produce documentation to prove the lineage, and that they are English Cream Golden Retrievers. Not just very light golden American Golden Retrievers. There is usually an increased cost for English Cream Golden Retrievers, simply because it costs a lot to buy the very best examples from Europe and ship them over.

The average price of an English Cream Golden Retriever falls somewhere between $1,500 and $3,500. The price will be dependent on your location, supply and demand, breeder reputation, and the pups lineage. Some English Cream Goldens can fetch tens of thousands of dollars from highly regarded breeders.

Of course, budget is always an important consideration but never be tempted to work with a backstreet breeder. Its true that you get what you pay for. Reputable breeders care about the health of their pups, whereas puppy mills only care about profit. Health care is expensive, so they pump out as many puppies as they can without any concern for them or their mother.

English Cream Golden Retriever Puppies

Over the years weve snapped thousands of pics. Here are just a handful from our English Cream Golden Retriever puppy archive:

We pulled the puppies around the neighborhood in the wagon before they were vaccinated. We wanted them to experience some of the sights and sounds outside the house while also keeping them safe. They were about 6 weeks old in this pic.

Heres a pic of one pup sticking his head out of the whelping box. Until our puppies go to their forever homes at about 8 weeks old they spend a good amount of time in the whelping box.

Our English Creams pups were about 7 weeks old in this pic. Yep, we had a litter of Christmas puppies and gathered them together for a festive photo.

We used the Carlson Portable Pet Pen as an outdoor play area for our puppies so they can experience a different environment at a young age.

We believe young puppies should have the opportunity to develop emotionally, socially and physically from the moment they are born. We imprint each puppy daily by touching and handling. It doesnt take long and we are soon rewarded with lots of puppy kisses. It is believed that early Neurological stimulation enhances a puppys development. Originally called the Bio Sensor Program these exercises were developed by the U.S. Military for their canine training programs to give the dogs a superior advantage in life. There were five benefits observed in canines that were exposed to the stimulation exercises. Improved cardio vascular performance stronger heart beats, stronger adrenal glands, more tolerance to stress and greater resistance to disease. Buying a genetically superior puppy will reduce the number of trips to the Veterinarian you have to make in the long run.

Why English Cream Golden Retrievers

We owned, loved and bred American Golden Retrievers prior to discovering the English Cream Goldens. While both make wonderful family pets, the improved health and longevity of the English Cream Goldens has earned them a special place in our hearts, and we want to give you a chance to enjoy the boundless love and companionship these amazing dogs have to offer.

All Golden Retrievers are descended from a line originally bred in Scotland in the late 1800’s, and they come in a spectrum of colors ranging from pale cream to golden red. English Cream Golden Retrievers are not a separate breed. Throughout Europe, the UK, Canada and even Australia, they are just called Golden Retrievers. The other nicknames are used by Americans to differentiate the American Goldens from those bred to conform to the European breed standards. In addition to their distinctive pale cream coat, the European standards typically produce Goldens with a blockier head, slightly shorter frame, and a more mellow temperament than their American counterparts.
