What To Feed A Golden Retriever

Extra- Ordinary Golden Retriever puppies for Sale

Golden Retriever puppies should be fed a large-breed, high-quality puppy formula that contains grain until they are a year of age. Once they reach maturity, they will need to be transitioned to a large-breed, high-quality adult formula containing grain over five days to avoid an upset stomach. Choosing an AAFCO -approved food is a great place to start, but your veterinarian can help you narrow down your options to find the best food for your Golden Retriever.

It is very important to NOT feed a Golden Retriever a grain-free diet that contains any legumes within the top five ingredients, because a correlation has been found between these diets and dilated cardiomyopathy . Therefore, make sure to check the ingredients in the dog food prior to purchasing it and talk with your veterinarian for diet recommendations specific to your dogs needs.

Golden Retrievers Are Record Holders

A couple of Golden Retrievers have made it into the Guinness Book of World Records. An Australian Golden holds the world record for the loudest bark, measured at 113.1 decibels 3 decibels louder than a buzzing chainsaw. Another Golden Retriever holds the record for the most tennis balls held in the mouth, at five tennis balls.

Golden Retrievers are an impressive bunch, as any Golden lover knows. Its no wonder they are the third most popular dog breed in the U.S.

Goldens Are Hailed As Super Heroes

Paula Godwin / Facebook

Golden retrievers are fiercely loyal to their families, so it’s no surprise that there are countless stories of goldens protecting or rescuing their people from dangerous situations.

Todd, the sweet golden pictured here, is one of those puppy heroes. In June 2018, Todd went on a hike with his owner, Paula, on a trail near Anthem, Arizona. During their hike, Paula nearly stepped on a rattlesnakeand when the snake lunged at her, Todd jumped in front of her to protect her. Although Todd was bitten on the nose and had severe swelling in his face, he’s expected to make a full recovery.

Because of his heroic deed, the internet has hailed Todd as a very, very good boy. And believe it or not, Todd has found a way to be an even better boy: He has a GoFundMe page to help other heroic doggies who have suffered from the same injuries.

What Are The Three Types Of Golden Retrievers

The three different types of golden retrievers are the American golden retriever, the Canadian golden retriever, and the British or English golden retriever. Although they have subtle differences, each of these three types of goldens has a similar personality and will behave in the same way. Keep in mind that these are only varieties within a single golden retriever breed.

What To Expect From All Varieties

No matter which variety you choose, all golden retrievers have similar temperaments. And despite their physical differences, each variety is easy to house train, and eager to please, which makes this breed a great choice if you are a novice owner.

In general, you can expect a dog that is:

    • Attention-seeking

That being said, when you think of a golden retriever, you likely think of an American or a British variety. This is because of the long wavy coats that are characteristic of the breed.

Keep in mind, while goldens make amazing companions and loving pets to people of all ages, they are, foremost, working dogs. This means your golden will enjoy hunting or any type of work or water activities and require daily vigorous exercise.

The best way to keep your golden retrievers energy in check is to keep them occupied with regular exercise and play sessions. Activities such as jogging, cycling, hiking, swimming, running, or brisk walks are all great ways to keep your golden exercised and on the best behavior.

Dont forget to keep your pooch mentally stimulated with puzzle toys, and make sure your golden has an array of different toys.

Since all golden retrievers were bred to retrieve downed game, they are naturally mouthy and have a strong urge to carry something in their mouth. To prevent your pooch from taking a liking to your favorite shoes, make sure there are fun and interesting toys your dog can mouth instead.

What Are The Three Different Types Of Golden Retrievers

Superb Golden Retriever Puppies ( Import Father Chinese Long Hair )

There is some confusion about whether golden retrievers come in different varieties. The short answer is yes. But the distinction is more nuanced. Simply stated, there are two ways golden retrievers can differ one from another. The first is by type. There are three different varieties of this dog: Canadian golden retrievers, British or English golden retrievers, and American golden retrievers.

The differences between these three kinds of golden retrievers are minimal. They are mostly physical , and these differences have emerged naturally over the course of breeding. They have no real effect on the temperament or health of the dogs.

While this may sound like there are three different golden retriever breeds you can choose from, thats not really the case. It is worth noting that despite their subtle differences, they are all purebred dogs and members of the one and only purebred golden retriever breed.

But, lets find out more about different golden retrievers, starting with the Canadian type.

What Are The Hair Growth Stages For The Golden Retriever

Now that we know a bit more about when the full coat starts to come in for the Golden Retriever, it is time to learn more about some of the hair growth stages that this dog will go through.

The initial growth that is going to start showing up at three months old is going to be really subtle and you may not notice it as much until they are one year old.

The Golden Retriever is going to have a full coat that they will keep in their adult lives when they reach the age of two.

The long adult hair will be one of the first places where the hair will grow longer.

This is a process that will start at the tail and then the feathering process will proceed to the legs and to the stomach.

With time, the entire body will end up with the full coat and longer hair.

It will not only be longer, but it is likely that the adult coat is going to come in at a slightly darker color than the puppy fur.

Feathered fur that is found on the tail, legs, and stomach, will often be light and soft, especially when compared to the longer hair that is on the top.

This is a good thing because it provides for temperature regulation.

This same fur will be able to thicken when it gets cold out, allowing the dog a way to stay warm.

Keep in mind here that this breed will not shed off their puppy fur.

This can seem a little strange, especially if you have worked with other dogs in the past.

Instead, the new hair is going to start to grow and this will nudge the puppy fur to the side.

Which Type Of Golden Retriever Is Best

There is no best type of golden retriever because all of them are the same breed. All three types are energetic and easy to train, can serve as guide dogs, and behave in the same way. Ultimately, you should base your decision on personal preference and choose a dog that will fit into your family and lifestyle.

But whichever type you choose, know that you will gain a faithful, affectionate, amicable, and fun-loving companion for many years to come. The only thing you should ask yourself is whether you want a golden with a longer coat and a full ruff or a golden with a shorter and thinner coat.

    Adopting Golden Retriever Puppies

Long Haired Golden Retriever Puppy For Sale Near Me US.Opor.net

According to the AKC, most breed rescues report that a majority of their rescue dogs come from individual owner surrender, with the most common reasons being a change in lifestyle or the breed not being a good fit. This means that there may be many dogs and puppies out there that are looking for a new forever home.

The main difference between a breeder and a rescue is that a rescue may not always have young puppies to choose from. The benefit, however, is that most are mandated to only adopt out dogs that have been microchipped and spayed/neutered. This means you may end up with a dog thats already been housebroken, and doesnt need these common medical procedures. You may also find a golden retriever mix that has all the traits you want from the breed, but with a little extra thrown in.

Finding a golden retriever rescue can be as simple as searching the internet. The AKC also has an excellent list of golden retriever rescues on their site.

American Vs Canadian Vs British Golden Retrievers

There seems to be a lot of misinformation when it comes to American vs. Canadian vs. British goldens.

Remember, according to the Golden Retriever Club of America, and also the Golden Retriever Club of Canada, there is just one breed of golden retriever.

So to say that these are different types of golden retrievers is a little misleading

However, the breed standards are not so standard across the three nations.

    American Standard
    Not specified
Coat colors Rich, lustrous golden of various shadesPredominant body color which is either extremely pale or extremely dark is undesirable lustrous golden of various shades. Any shade of gold or cream, neither red nor mahogany.

Here are some interesting notes from the table above:

    • The British standard accepts shorter goldens
    • The AKC specifically says extremely pale or extremely dark is undesirable.
    • The British Kennel Club accepts cream as a color

Although these nations vary in accepted colors and sizes, one thing remains true: golden retrievers are typically sweet, loving family dogs.

So far this list has included different styles or fancy names of the same breed of golden retrievers, but thats about to change

Short Haired Golden Retriever: Things To Know

    Tom Thorpe Blog

When you think of a Golden Retriever, one of the characteristics youre likely to see is the long golden coat that is often attributed to the breed. Of course, dogs with longer coats tend to shed more heavily, which often leads potential dog owners to consider alternatives. One such option that is often the subject of debate is the short haired Golden Retriever.

Although many people will say they saw these dogs, others claim that it is simply not possible for the Golden Retriever to have short hair. Whats the truth about that? If youve been looking for a short-haired Golden retriever to be introduced into your family or as a new companion, but youre not sure whether this unique type of Goldie even exists, here are some key points to keep in mind.

Make sure to do your research when looking to adopt a Golden Retriever, or find a reputable breeder so that medical issues are less likely.

The medical issues listed below are some of the most common health issues that Golden Retrievers are predisposed to, but this list is not all-inclusive.

Other Options If You Want A Short Haired Golden Retriever

If you want a golden retriever but dont want to deal with the long hair, you might want to consider another type of dog.

Goldendoodles could be a good option, or labradors, or golden retriever mixes.

I have a friend who had a golden retriever and lab mix and he essentially looks like a short-haired golden retriever.

Hes sweet like labs and goldens, has a blocky head, and has lots of energy.

Why Do Some Golden Retrievers Have Short Hair

Golden retrievers with short hair are not an officially recognized breed by the American Kennel Club because this breed is known for its long hair.

There are a couple of reasons that may result in short hair, leading to the discovery that the golden retriever is not entirely pure or that there is some genetic variation that is specific to the dog.
