The breed was first considered to be a yellow variety of Flat-Coated Retrievers but was recognized as a separate breed, the Yellow or Golden Retriever, in 1912. A few of these dogs had come to America by way of Lord Tweedmouths sons by 1900, but the AKC did not register them as a separate breed until 1927.

Other Ways To Rescue A Golden Retriever

If the golden retriever rescues near you dont have any goldens available, its time to get crafty!

The first way to find a golden who needs a new home is to join your local golden retriever Facebook groups.

Sometimes people will post in there that they need to give up their dog.

Its usually not because of the dog, but because the person has ran into some unfortunate life circumstance.

Of course, thats where you can come in and offer your loving home!

This strategy can also be done in other local forums or apps.

Its a game of patience and opportunity, but if youre in there, your chance may come.

The other option is to speak with your local golden retriever club

Are You A Senior Does That Mean You Can’t Adopt From Grrmf

GRRMF will adopt to senior citizens, however, certain circumstances must be met. As always, we try to balance the needs of our golden retrievers with the needs of the human caregivers.

When an applicant is age 70 and up, we will only match these homes with our older golden retrievers. Goldens are very active dogs that can live 10-12+ years. If you are 70 and adopt a 1-3 year old is it reasonable to be able to handle a golden when you are 80? We will also look carefully at the lifestyle of applicants in their 60s to make sure it fits the age of the dog requested if they want a young dog.

If you are in your late 70s or 80s we have additional requirements for adoption. You must:

  • be physically and financially able to care for a large dog
  • be willing to adopt a senior dog 9 and up
  • have a care plan in place with an adult child or friend that will step in and care for the dog in an emergency or long term situation and has the information if needed to contact GRRMF who will take the dog back into our program.

For any applicant life can change in an instant. As we get older there is even a greater chance that a health incident might change our ability to care for a dog, so we feel these precautions are justified.

Why Do People Put Golden Retrievers For Adoption In Michigan

While they are beautiful to look at, the Golden retriever isnt for everyone. There are many Golden Retrievers for adoption throughout the state of Michigan. If youre considering one of these dogs, here is what you will need to know:

  • Your Golden Retriever will need space to move. Goldens are medium-large dog breeds that love being with their families and running about outdoors. That being said, your Golden Retriever rescue will need an apartment large enough to host this active dog or a yard where they can freely move.
  • Golden Retrievers shed. Your Golden Retriever will shed throughout the year, with more shedding in spring and autumn. The easiest way to maintain this is to brush your Golden Retriever every 3 to 5 times weekly. You will also need to invest in a powerful vacuum cleaner to remove the mess from the sofa and carpets. If you have allergy sensitivities, you might want to consider hypoallergenic breeds such as Goldendoodles.
  • Its not ideal to leave your Golden Retriever alone for 5+ hours. Golden Retrievers are social dogs and create strong bonds with their humans. They are gentle and naturally gravitate towards being around humans. Leaving your Golden Retriever can generate separation anxiety, destructive behavior , and even depression. Hiring a pet walker or taking your Golden Retriever to daycare can help if you really need to leave.

This breed is known for its beautiful coat, but those who have pet allergies or cant stand dog hair wont be happy that their furniture and clothes have a semi-permanent coat of hair constantly. The Golden Retrievers long coats also require lots of maintenance and grooming which can be expensive and time-consuming. Many first-time dog owners dont truly understand the maintenance requirements of a Golden Retriever and thus, they end up in a rescue.

We Did It Thank You For All That You Contributed

The story begins years ago when GRRoW began to consider international rescue. In 2020, during a pandemic, we shared the experience with eight other rescues to bring 100 dogs to the U.S. from China. You can learn through the stories, of Sydney, Wendy, Wang Wang, Bei Bei, Bobby and Sunny that these dogs now have a second chance with new owners who are lucky to add them to their lives. Their owners and fosters are thrilled for the opportunity to experience something special and positive during such negative times.

GRRoW thanks the donors, fosters, fundraisers, transporters, coordinators, dog advocates and cheerleaders for these dogs. In this time of uncertainty, one thing is for certain: these dogs that came into GRROW are in their happy place.

International rescue is not for everyone, and we at GRRoW understand that. We continue to be available for EVERY dog that comes into our area. However, our adoption list continues to get longer. Our adoptions are occasionally closed due to the long wait.

We will continue to look at international options. We invite your support for our efforts by starting an international fund to use when these dogs become available to rescue. We have a generous donor who was so moved by the experience with the China dogs, he started the seed to start the international account. Please consider this option in choosing how your donation dollars are spent.

Another Important Consideration When Looking At The Different Breeds Is The Size Of The Puppies

If you live close to a large city or have limited space, then you will probably want to consider an indoor dog instead of an outdoor dog. Golden Retrievers love to be near humans, and will often bark if they are left alone for long periods of time. If you have the time and the space to housebreak your dog, then an indoor dog may be better suited for you and your family.

If you are looking to get a dog from one of the more popular golden retriever breeders, make sure that you look at their history as well as their temperament and experience. You dont want to end up adopting a puppy from a bad breeder or an inexperienced breeder. It can be very difficult to tell the difference between good breeders and bad breeders, and it is important that you know exactly who you are getting your dog from, and how old they are. Golden Retrievers has very young babies and older dogs, so if you are buying a puppy over five years old, you are going to be getting an older dog.

Picking out the perfect puppy can be a challenge, but with a little work, you can find a great dog for your family.

Make sure that you are aware of the various breeds and temperaments and find out the exact personality traits that are desirable. If you are interested in purchasing a puppy for a friend or a special friend, then you may want to consult someone in your circle of friends who has a golden retriever for adoption. If you are not sure, then ask a friend or family member to recommend a reputable breeder.

Golden Retrievers Need A Lot Of Exercise

Similarly to the last point, Golden Retrievers are hyper-energetic dogs who love to run and play. Originally bred for hunting, these dogs are at home running around outdoors, which means they need a lot of room to run at home. Unfortunately, living in a city or a small home with little to no yard isnt just annoying for the owner whose dog wont leave them alone its unfair to the dog who just wants to play! Thus, those who dont live an active lifestyle often put their Golden Retriever up for adoption in Ohio.
