Why Is Your Golden Retriever Overweight
Have you been giving your golden retriever tons of treats on a daily basis? Are you giving your pet lots of table scraps every night?
You could be the reason why he or she is overweight. But there are other reasons for the increased weight.
Various health conditions could be causing your golden retriever to gain weight. These include Cushings disease, which affects the adrenal glands.
When treated for this condition, dogs are usually prescribed steroids, but the drawback is that this stimulates their appetite and makes them gain weight. Other health conditions that could be affecting your pets weight include canine diabetes, thyroid problems, and anxiety.
If you suspect a health condition is the reason why your golden retriever is putting on weight, you should consult with your vet as soon as possible.
What Is The Best Age To Spay/neuter A Golden Retriever
You can spay puppies as early as 8 weeks old, but any time before they reach sexual maturity is preferred, which is around one year old.
This will prevent undesirable behaviors such as marking, territorial behavior, or a fixation with toys. All of which are hard to correct when they manifest.
For breeds that are predisposed to hip dysplasia, vets recommend spaying around the 6-month mark.

Higgins Has A Bright Future But Wilcox On The Other Hand
Sweet Higgins was picked up by Kent County Animal Control and taken to safety. Higgins condition hasnt been made public. He will remain in the care of the county shelter until the case has been completed in the court system. Higgins will hopefully then find his furever family where he will know nothing but love and kindness.
Wilcox, on the other hand, isnt getting the kind of love and affection that Higgins is getting. The alleged perpetrator was charged with a misdemeanor that could earn him up to 93 days in jail, a $1,000 fine, and 200 hours of community service. We hope that whatever the punishment, justice is served for innocent little Higgins, who wanted nothing but love and affection.
According to WoodTV, Wilcoxs employer, Fide Freight, released a statement:
Fide doesnt stand by this behavior and has since released this employee. Fide very much loves our furry community in the office and provides our critters with their own beds, treats and love from our employees daily We have also committed to donating to a few local shelters in the Grand Rapids area. We understand this doesnt make a difference to the situation that took place, but we hope to support the shelters that support the animals in need.

Bone And Joint Problems
A number of different musculoskeletal problems have been reported in Golden Retrievers. While it may seem overwhelming, each condition can be diagnosed and treated to prevent undue pain and suffering. With diligent observation at home and knowledge about the diseases that may affect your friend’s bones, joints, or muscles, you will be able to take great care of him throughout his life.
- Both hips and elbows are at risk for dysplasia, an inherited disease that causes the joints to develop improperly and results in arthritis. Stiffness in your Golden’s elbows or hips may become a problem for him, especially as he matures. You may notice that he begins to show lameness in his legs or has difficulty getting up from lying down. We can treat the arthritisthe sooner the betterto minimize discomfort and pain. Well take X-rays of your dogs bones to identify issues as early as possible. Surgery is also sometimes a good option in severe and life-limiting cases. And keep in mind that overweight dogs may develop arthritis years earlier than those of normal weight, causing undue pain and suffering!

Children And Other Pets
The amiable Golden Retriever isn’t bothered by the noise and commotion of kids in fact, he thrives on it. He’s a large, strong dog, though, and he can easily knock over a small child by mistake.
As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any biting or ear or tail pulling on the part of either party. Teach your child never to approach any dog while he’s eating or sleeping or to try to take the dog’s food away. No dog, no matter how friendly, should ever be left unsupervised with a child.
The Golden’s attitude toward other pets is the more the merrier. He enjoys the companionship of other dogs, and with proper introductions and training, can be trusted with cats, rabbits, and other animals.

What Is Causing My Golden Retriever To Appear Small

If your Golden Retriever is over 18 months old and well-under the average measurements in the growth chart and size guide, it could be related to any of the following:
- Poor diet
- A smaller breed
- Old age
Each of these possible problems presents challenges to the development process and the degenerative attributes that can present themselves with senior dogs. Lets take a detailed look at each.

How Do I Make My Golden Retriever Healthy
Regular Veterinary
The Golden Retrievers can be a wonderful, loving and affectionate dog. Because they are purebred, they are more prone to inheritable diseases. These can cause them to live a shorter life span and have a lower quality of their lives. Regular veterinary treatment can prevent or treat many genetic disorders. Preventive measures are often more cost-effective and easier than treatments. Your Goldie can have a happy and healthy existence by getting regular veterinary attention.
Healthy Eating Habits
Lifestyle choices, such as healthy eating habits and regular exercise, are important for your pups happiness in the long-term. Your veterinarian may recommend that your Golden Retriever puppy be fed a high-breed growth food. This can increase their ability to grow and help prevent hip dysplasia.
Controlled Diet
According to the Veterinary Centers of America Golden Retrievers are much more likely than other dogs to gain excess weight. Because of their long hair, Golden Retrievers should be monitored closely to check if they have gained weight. This can be accomplished by paying close attention to your Goldens overall health and routine observation by your veterinarian.

Could My Small Golden Retriever Have Been The Runt Of The Litter
We have explored a wide range of possible reasons why your Golden Retriever appears to be smaller than normalbut it could just simply be that your dog was the of the litter.
A runt of a litter is one puppy that is smaller and weaker than the rest of the litter after birth. A Golden Retriever that was the runt of its litter will not grow to the full size expected of the breedbut a runt is still a purebred and not considered a miniature Golden Retriever.
The runt of the litter will typically suffer from inadequate development based on a severe lack of nutrition during the puppy stage due to the fierce competition of other puppies receiving from the mother.
The stress of the situation combined with the lack of nutrition manages to stunt the growth of a runt that carries over into the later growing period as well.
If this is the case, there isnt anything you can do to make your Golden Retriever grow more but it is worth a shot incorporating some of the above-mentioned measures to increase growth.
It isnt necessarily a cause for alarm if your Golden Retriever was the runt of the litter runts will appear smaller than normal but can certainly go on to live perfectly normal and healthy lives.
