Backcrossing is breeding a hybrid back to one of the breeds it originates from. Genetically, this means theyre still first-generation. However, the traits of either the retriever or the poodle can be intensified. Breeders tend to cross a doodle back with a poodle to increase chances of a lower shedding litter. Hybrid vigor is still present, but since multigenerational litters have a greater chance of inheriting diseases from the same breed line, genetic health testing becomes more important to rule out disease carriers.

This adorable hybrid first came into existence at SwissRidge Kennels in 2013. A beautiful chocolate goldendoodle named Lazeeza and a stunning tri-colored bernedoodle named Henry were the proud parents of the worlds first golden mountain doodle litter. The name Golden Mountain Doodle was coined by Jamie Amell via a competition we held through our Facebook group and this breed has been a hit ever since!
The golden mountain doodle is made up of a golden retriever, Bernese mountain dog and poodle. I wanted to breed the golden retriever back into the bernedoodle because, while there are so many amazing traits within the bernedoodle, I have found that they can be stubborn. By mixing some golden retriever back into the bernedoodle, my hope was that it would reduce this stubborn streak. Well, weve had a handful of litters and it appears to have worked!

Golden Labradoodle With Hair Coat
This Labradoodle inherits more genetic influence coat-wise from the Labrador Retriever parent dog. Often puppies with hair coats come from F1 generation litters .
If your puppy grows up to have a hair coat type as an adult, the coat will look like a straight or wavy much longer and shaggier version of the Labrador Retriever coat. This hair coat type is fairly wash-and-wear. But you can expect more doggy odor. Plus lots of vacuuming to keep your home from being blanketed in dead, shed dog hair. And if you have dog dander allergies this is not the coat type for you!
What Does F1 F1b F2 Etc Mean When Describing A Goldendoodle
The F1, F1B, F2, F3, etc. all describe the crosses between parents and grand parents that make up the geneology
Heres a simple breakdown on how it all works:
- An F1 is the offspring of a poodle bred with a golden retriever.
- An F1B Goldendoodle is the offspring of a poodle and an F1 Goldendoodle.
- An F2 Goldendoodle is the offspring of an F1 and another F1 goldendoodle , and an F2B Goldendoodle is the offspring of an F1 and an F1B Goldendoodles.
- Some people have started mating F3 Goldendoodles between two F2 Goldendoodles.
The next time you hear someone talking about having an F1B or F2B Mini Goldendoodle you will know exactly what they are talking about.

Many breeds will simply list Multi-generation Goldendoodle instead of listing the exact generation of Goldendoodle. You will have to ask your breeder to specify which generation your Goldendoodle is.

English golden retrievers contain the stockier and more laid-back traits, and have a lighter coat in comparison to their North American counterpart, whom are typically darker in colour and more slender, with a more active personality.
We favour English golden retrievers within our breeding program, and have traveled across Europe acquiring some of the finest European breeding stock to incorporate into our lines.
Many breeders in the United States use field retrievers to produce their goldendoodles. These retrievers are bred for field work and tend to be very lanky and hyper. As a result they tend to produce hyper, lanky goldendoodles. This is a good example of why research is essential to finding a conscientious breeder.
Can You Breed A Goldendoodle With A Retriever
You can breed a Goldendoodle with a Retriever however, the process is complicated and not common practice. This breed of a Goldendoodle with a Retriever would create a Goldendoodle that would technically be 75% Golden Retriever and 25% Poodle.
When a Goldendoodle is backcrossed, it is to the purebred Poodle and not the Golden Retriever. They call this backcrossing what a breeder does to create another generation variation of Goldendoodle. These dogs end up having more characteristics of one purebred parent, the Poodle.
When you breed a Goldendoodle with a Retriever, they end up having more characteristics of the Golden Retriever and less of the Poodle through the Goldendoodle. Is F1 Or F2 Goldendoodle Better
While they are considered more hypoallergenic, F2 Goldendoodles are quite unpredictable. Its hard to determine their coat type, hair, and how much shedding they will produce as it varies so much. Its this reason we dont see many breeders breeding F2 Goldendoodles as they can be harder to sell.
F1 Goldendoodles, on the other hand, feature the highest qualities and are considered a Hybrid Vigor breed. Theres less risk of genetic issues or inbreeding complications, although you will still need to be aware of health risks like eye diseases and hip dysplasia. F1 Goldendoodles are considered to be healthier than next-generation dogs , but you are less likely to have a hypoallergenic dog.
Both F1 and F2 Goldendoodles will have similar personalities as they share the same heritage. F2 Goldendoodles will have been mixed with Doodles rather than the purebred Golden Retriever and Poodle, so sometimes their personalities can be slightly different. What Is An F1b Goldendoodle And F1b Labradoodle
An F1B Goldendoodle is a cross-breed of an F1 Goldendoodle with a Poodle. This generation is popular due to the non shedding trait that occurs 99% of the time. This generation is the most hypoallergenic Goldendoodle type of the different generations. So if you have severe allergies this would be the best fit for your home. You still get the same strength and good health and the favorable personality traits with the F1B Doodle. The coat type again will vary here and can be long and wavy or shorty and curly. You will also see more color variation in the F1B generations.
What Are These Health Problems
The Canine Health Information Center has an updated list of all known genetic health issues for every purebred dog breed known to have them. As part of your research, you can visit CHIC to get the most updated health list for both the Standard Poodle and the Labrador Retriever. Then you can ask your Labradoodle breeder for verification that both parent dogs have been cleared of all known genetic health issues. But, we will also look briefly at these problems here.
