What To Expect From Golden Retriever Rescue Centers
When you head to a golden retriever rescue center, expect to find a range of dogs that are identifiable as golden retrievers or golden retriever mixed breeds.
They will range in age from puppies to mature dogs and will have different levels of training and socialization.
The rescue center will provide the dogs with medical care, shelter, and training, and at the same time, look for suitable homes for each dog.
Expect the rescue center to ask you a number of questions to ensure you are ready to adopt a golden retriever. They will work with you and consider:
- Whether your lifestyle will permit you to care for and spend quality time with a pet?
- Whether you are prepared for the financial burden of caring for a dog for the next 10-15 years, including food, veterinary bills, and so forth?
- Whether you have the facilities to keep a large dog like a golden retriever?
If you are a suitable candidate, they will then work with you to find the most suitable dog from the shelter for you to adopt.
Dont worry rescues will not place dangerous dogs, such as dogs that bite, in your home.

A reputable breeder will require the people who buy their puppies to return them if for any reason they are unable to continue caring for them. What Are The Golden Retriever Colors
The breed was first considered to be a yellow variety of Flat-Coated Retrievers but was recognized as a separate breed, the Yellow or Golden Retriever, in 1912. A few of these dogs had come to America by way of Lord Tweedmouths sons by 1900, but the AKC did not register them as a separate breed until 1927.

The Story From The Dogs Side
OUR DOGS: So where does your new pup come from? The number one source for our dogs is owner turn-ins. The top reasons people turn dogs in are because a family is moving, experiencing financial distress, have no time for the dog, or owner health issues. Our second source is dogs from shelters. Lastly, we are called on directly at times to take in strays. On some occasions, we receive calls from contacts outside of Florida needing assistance with re-homing dogs from other shelters or rescue situations.
VETERINARY REQUIREMENTS: The first stop for your prospective new family member is to one of our vets. The dogs are checked out, nose to tail, and any problems noted. They are spayed or neutered, micro-chipped, and vaccinated. As the microchip registry will list GRRMF, it means you have an ally in locating a lost dog if that should happen. Any known physical problems will be dealt with and any continuing health issues will be disclosed to you prior to you making a decision on adopting.
The 5 Step Adoption Process
1.Read about Goldens and make sure they are the right fit for you and your home.
2. Once you are sure about adopting then simply decide on a color and which training program you would like.
3. Once you have reviewed “The four P’s” then simply fill out The Golden Retriever Reserve’s easy 19 question adoption questionnaire listed BELOW and you will automatically be added to the LIST OF INTEREST.
4. After joining the List of interest by filling out the questionnaire below, then we will contact you. When there is a puppy available that fits your needs then you will fill out the contract and submit a deposit to officially reserve your puppy.
5. Puppies will be ready for homes starting at 8 weeks of age and will come home with their very own ‘Puppy Packet’ which includes their AKC Registration, Health Certificate, Puppy Vaccination Records, Buyers’ Contract, toy, and bag of starter food.
COLOR: We specialize in Dark Red Goldens and Lighter Goldens as well because we couldn’t decide on just one color. We wanted both! So now we offer both to our clients as well.Tell us which color you’re more interested in on the questionnaire!

After we review your information, an SGRR volunteer will contact you within a few days to discuss the application and adoption process and to answer any questions you may have. SGRR is an all-volunteer organization and your patience is appreciated.
Tests & treatment for Heartworm, tick-borne diseases, intestinal parasites.Bordetella, Rabies, and other age appropriate vaccines.Microchip with lifetime registration to SGRR. Each Golden entering our adoption program is given a wellness check by one of our partner veterinarians prior to being adopted. As such, they are spayed or neutered, brought current on vaccinations, tested for heartworms & tick-borne disease, microchipped, and started on monthly heartworm preventative. Golden retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds when it comes to pets, especially for those looking at larger dogs, rather than small pooches.
While every dog is different, the golden retriever breed has a lot of characteristics that make them ideal pets:
- They are affectionate and friendly and will bond with you very quickly.
- They wont bark at or intimidate your friends and neighbors as they like pretty much everybody .
- They get along with other dogs, so they fit in well in homes that already have pets.
- They bond with children quickly and form mild protective instincts plus, they are very aware of their own size and strength and know how to be gentle with children.

After all, arent they like used cars? Who wants someone elses problems? If the dog is so wonderful, why would anyone give him away? If he was a stray, why didnt someone try to find him? Id rather buy a golden puppy so I know what Im getting, and besides theyre so cute!
Golden rescues often hear a variation of this conversation. Many prospective golden owners are just not convinced that owning an older pre-owned golden is better than buying a puppy. But there are a number of reasons why adopting a golden retriever from a rescue that carefully screens and evaluates its goldens can provide an even better alternative.
Unfortunately, many folks think dogs that end up in rescue are all genetically and behaviorally inferior. But, it is not uncommon for us to get $500-1000 dogs that have either outlived their usefulness or their novelty with impulsive owners who considered their dog a possession rather than a friend or member of the family, or simply did not really consider the time, effort and expense needed to be a dog owner.
Not all breeders will accept returns, so choices for giving up dogs can be limited to animal welfare organizations, such as rescues, or the owners trying to place their own dogs. Good rescues will evaluate the dog before accepting him/her , rehabilitate if necessary, and adopt the animal only when he/she is ready and to a home that matches and is realistic about the commitment necessary to provide the dog with the best home possible.

More Ways To Find A Rescue Golden Retriever
If none of the rescues above have a Golden Retriever available for you, then there are three other ways to find a rescue Golden that require a little luck, patience and creativity.
The first way is to comb your local animal shelters.
If they have golden retrievers available, theyll go fast, so youll need to check early and often.
The second way is to get involved in your local Golden Retriever Facebook groups.
Ive seen many owners want to find a new home for their Golden themselves, instead of going through a rescue group.
Theyll post in these groups trying to find a loving home for their pup, which is where you can step in and offer yours.
The third way is to get involved with your local Golden Retriever club.
This is another long shot, but they might have an inside scoop on Goldens that need a new home, plus the more Golden lovers you know, the more likely you are to find your own Golden.

Golden retrievers are very social dogs and they dont like to be left alone for long periods of time.
They are also highly intelligent, which means they are smart enough to get into trouble if you leave them with nothing to do for hours on end.
Every golden is different, but as a general rule, they should only be left alone for a maximum of eight hours at a time.

Golden Huggs Rescue is made up of a very small group of volunteers who have made it our mission to find loving suitable homes for displaced, abandoned, or stray dogs with golden personalities with our partners outside of New England.
Our dogs have either been relinquished by their owners, found as strays, or abandoned at the shelter door. It is irrelevant to us how they have managed to find themselves in these circumstances. It is only in their best interest that we try in earnest to get them out.
All of our volunteers have been involved in the rescue and placing of dogs for years. We are committed to doing our part to decrease the numbers of dogs that are euthanized at primarily southern shelters.

We do have a waiting list and be aware that younger dogs and 4 7 year old goldens are our most requested ages with the longest wait times. If you are approved to adopt a GRRMF retriever or blend, and one of our dogs is a match for you, you will be contacted after their evaluation period.

One way is to get involved with your local golden retriever Facebook groups.
Heres why: sometimes people will need to give up their dog because they ran into unfortunate life circumstances.
They still love their dog so theyd rather find them a new home themselves, rather than give them up to an organization.
Thats where you can come in.
It doesnt happen often, but if youre patient, you can probably find a great dog that way.

The story begins years ago when GRRoW began to consider international rescue. In 2020, during a pandemic, we shared the experience with eight other rescues to bring 100 dogs to the U.S. from China. You can learn through the stories, of Sydney, Wendy, Wang Wang, Bei Bei, Bobby and Sunny that these dogs now have a second chance with new owners who are lucky to add them to their lives. Their owners and fosters are thrilled for the opportunity to experience something special and positive during such negative times.
GRRoW thanks the donors, fosters, fundraisers, transporters, coordinators, dog advocates and cheerleaders for these dogs. In this time of uncertainty, one thing is for certain: these dogs that came into GRROW are in their happy place.
International rescue is not for everyone, and we at GRRoW understand that. We continue to be available for EVERY dog that comes into our area. However, our adoption list continues to get longer. Our adoptions are occasionally closed due to the long wait.
We will continue to look at international options. We invite your support for our efforts by starting an international fund to use when these dogs become available to rescue. We have a generous donor who was so moved by the experience with the China dogs, he started the seed to start the international account.
