Due to their super sweet personalities, serious smarts, and adorable, toothy grins, golden retrievers are a hugely popular breed in the United States. In fact, golden retrievers have snagged the third spot for most popular dogs in the United States for the last several years!

These pooches are on the larger side and require lots of exercise, which may make some families shy away. But don’t let their sizeor high energydeter you. Golden retrievers are highly intelligent, easy to train , and incredibly friendly.

Whether you’re already a golden puppy parent or considering adding one to the family, read on to learn some fun facts of one of the world’s most popular breeds.

Goldens Are Hailed As Super Heroes

Paula Godwin / Facebook

Golden retrievers are fiercely loyal to their families, so it’s no surprise that there are countless stories of goldens protecting or rescuing their people from dangerous situations.

Todd, the sweet golden pictured here, is one of those puppy heroes. In June 2018, Todd went on a hike with his owner, Paula, on a trail near Anthem, Arizona. During their hike, Paula nearly stepped on a rattlesnakeand when the snake lunged at her, Todd jumped in front of her to protect her. Although Todd was bitten on the nose and had severe swelling in his face, he’s expected to make a full recovery.

Because of his heroic deed, the internet has hailed Todd as a very, very good boy. And believe it or not, Todd has found a way to be an even better boy: He has a GoFundMe page to help other heroic doggies who have suffered from the same injuries.

  • More About This Breed

  • It’s no surprise that the Golden Retriever is one of the top ten most popular dogs in the U.S. It’s all good with the Golden: he’s highly intelligent, sociable, beautiful, and loyal.

He’s also lively. The Golden is slow to mature and retains the silly, playful personality of a puppy until three to four years of age, which can be both delightful and annoying. Many keep their puppyish traits into old age.

Originally bred for the physically demanding job of retrieving ducks and other fowl for hunters, the Golden needs daily exercise: a walk or jog, free time in the yard, a run at the beach or lake , or a game of fetch. And like other intelligent breeds who were bred to work, they need to have a job to do, such as retrieving the paper, waking up family members, or competing in dog sports. A tired Golden is a well-behaved Golden.

As well as giving your Golden Retriever physical and mental exercise, you should also be prepared to include him in your family activities. The Golden Retriever is a family dog, and he needs to be with his “pack.” Don’t consider getting a Golden unless you’re willing to have him in the house with you, underfoot, every day.

There’s one other potential drawback to the breed: He’s definitely not a watchdog. He might bark when strangers come around, but don’t count on it. Most likely, he’ll wag his tail and flash that characteristic Golden smile.

    They Are Super Mouthy

    @jayzugal / Instagram

If you’ve ever owned a golden retrieveror have just eaten a meal near oneyou know how much they love to eat. Their love of food can cause health problems , so it’s important to feed your golden the right amount of food for her weight, age, and activity level. Not sure how much is right for your dog? Talk to your vet about a healthy diet. And take it easy on the treats!

It’s true that goldens love to eat, but they like to carry non-food items in their mouths, too. Their mouthy nature makes everyday stuff such as sticks, shoes, or even the remote control a highly prized possession.

Because golden retrievers have very gentle mouths, challenges such as the golden retriever egg challengein which a golden is tasked with holding an uncooked egg in its mouth without breaking ithave popped up all over the web.

    Field Bred Golden Retrievers

Field golden retrievers embody what golden retrievers were originally bred to do: hunt.

Field bred goldens are on the smaller end of the spectrum as far as how big goldens get, theyre athletic, and theyre typically more driven than other styles of goldens.

Their coats are usually shorter and range from gold to red, and they have tons of energy.

They excel at hunting and agility, and make great family pets, as long as theyre trained properly and have a job to do.

They also may be rather mouthy, considering theyre bred to retrieve things with their mouth.

To start this conversation off, its important to note that the Golden Retriever Club of America makes it clear that there is just one breed of golden retriever.

Yes, there are different styles , but theyre all one breed.

On the other hand, what some people call golden retrievers arent actually golden retrievers, like black golden retrievers and mini golden retrievers.

American Vs Canadian Vs British Golden Retrievers

There seems to be a lot of misinformation when it comes to American vs. Canadian vs. British goldens.

Remember, according to the Golden Retriever Club of America, and also the Golden Retriever Club of Canada, there is just one breed of golden retriever.

So to say that these are different types of golden retrievers is a little misleading

However, the breed standards are not so standard across the three nations.

    American Standard
    Not specified
Coat colors Rich, lustrous golden of various shadesPredominant body color which is either extremely pale or extremely dark is undesirable lustrous golden of various shades. Any shade of gold or cream, neither red nor mahogany.

Here are some interesting notes from the table above:

    • The British standard accepts shorter goldens
    • The AKC specifically says extremely pale or extremely dark is undesirable.
    • The British Kennel Club accepts cream as a color

Although these nations vary in accepted colors and sizes, one thing remains true: golden retrievers are typically sweet, loving family dogs.

So far this list has included different styles or fancy names of the same breed of golden retrievers, but thats about to change

    S Of White Golden Retrievers

Not only is it fun to look at the range of Golden Retriever colors you can find, it can also be helpful if you are trying to think up Golden Retriever Names.

The very palest of Golden Retrievers can fairly be described as white. Did you know that most of the whitest Golden Retrievers are from what are referred to as show lines. Bred historically for the ring rather than the field, these Goldens are the exact same breed, but have a slightly different parentage.

Their sleek coats look amazing in the snowy shade. And their coats can have no sign of color other than a little bit of a dark tone to their ears.

As the shade moves more into cream than white, they are still very pale dogs.

This was the first time we had a chance to chart puppies from birth until 8 weeks old.

We tried to take as many pictures as possible so we could have a journal of our Golden Retriever puppy growth week by week.

When raising guide and service dog puppies we usually bring home our puppies at around 7-8 weeks old.

On occasion we are allowed to see puppies before 8 weeks of age, but they need to stay with their mother and siblings during those important early weeks to get milk and antibodies from mama and learn how to interact properly with siblings, learning important behaviors like bite inhibition.

Our experience with puppies from birth to 8 weeks old was limited at best.

During our days as a foster we raised two litters of puppies, but both were already 3-4 weeks old by the time we got them home.

More recently we had the opportunity to meet Archers litter when they were 4 weeks old and then again at 6 weeks to do temperament testing.

Unless you get the opportunity to raise a litter of puppies its unlikely you will get to see much of the early stages of puppyhood.

The good news is Im going to share my pics and experiences with Ravens Litter from birth until 8 weeks old.

Keep your eyes and ears open and absorb it all like a sponge!

    Children And Other Pets

German Shepherd Meets Golden Retriever Puppy for the First Time

The amiable Golden Retriever isn’t bothered by the noise and commotion of kids in fact, he thrives on it. He’s a large, strong dog, though, and he can easily knock over a small child by mistake.

As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any biting or ear or tail pulling on the part of either party. Teach your child never to approach any dog while he’s eating or sleeping or to try to take the dog’s food away. No dog, no matter how friendly, should ever be left unsupervised with a child.

The Golden’s attitude toward other pets is the more the merrier. He enjoys the companionship of other dogs, and with proper introductions and training, can be trusted with cats, rabbits, and other animals.

    Coat Color And Grooming

Golden Retrievers have a dense, water-repellent outer coat with a thick undercoat. Some coats are wavy, some are straight. The fur feathers on the back of the front legs and underbody, with heavier feathering on the chest, back of the thighs, and tail.

Golden Retrievers come in all shades of gold, from light to dark gold. Some breeders have begun selling “rare white Goldens,” but the American Kennel Club does not recognize white as a coat color for the breed.

Golden Retrievers shed moderately in the winter and summer, and heavily in the spring and fall. If you live with a Golden, you’ll need to adapt to a certain amount of dog hair in your house and on your clothes.

The Golden’s thick coat means lots of grooming. Daily brushing is recommended to prevent tangling, and once a week is the bare minimum. Your Golden will also need a bath at least once a month, often more frequently, to keep him looking and smelling clean.

Brush your Golden’s teeth at least two or three times a week to remove tartar buildup and the bacteria that lurk inside it. Daily brushing is even better if you want to prevent gum disease and bad breath.

Begin accustoming your Golden to being brushed and examined when he’s a puppy. Handle his paws frequently dogs are touchy about their feet and look inside his mouth. Make grooming a positive experience filled with praise and rewards, and you’ll lay the groundwork for easy veterinary exams and other handling when he’s an adult.

Because golden retrievers are so eager to please their puppy parents, they’re one of the easier breeds to trainwhich makes them perfect for the silver screen. Tons of major movies, such as the “Air Bud” series, “Homeward Bound,””A Dog’s Purpose,” and even thrillers such as “Poltergeist” and “Friday the 13th” have goldens in the credit roll.

What’s more? There are a few golden retrievers in presidential history, too. Presidents Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford had goldens during their presidencies. Golden retrievers are often considered the all-American dogs, so it makes sense, right?
