What Does It Mean When A Dog Gives You His Paw

Why do Golden Retrievers put their Paws on you?

It is certainly an adorable gesture, but what does it mean? We often wish we could talk to our dogs, but they actually are often trying to communicate with us through their body language.

If your dog paws at you after you have stopped petting them, thats an easy signal saying: pet me more!. Cats also do this through headbutting and even grabbing at your hand, and while dogs may not have as much control over their paws, they will try this too!

Playtime is always a top priority with a dog and pawing at you is their way of getting your attention and getting you to play. They may also actively bring over toys to play with, so even if you are busy a quick game of fetch can satisfy their want for attention. They may also be feeling stressed out, wanting some TLC and reassurance, which can be shown through lip smacking, yawning and their ears being flattened back. In this case, taking them out of the situation may be the best bet.

Dogs are capable of incredible amounts of empathy and can often tell if you are feeling sad, lonely or even sick. If you are sad and your dog is putting its paw on you, that is actually a sign that they are wanting to comfort you and make you feel better. That is not only incredibly adorable, but also a reason why they make such good service animals and emotional support pets.

They Need Food Or Water

When its getting close to mealtime, your doggo may feel the need to remind you of their hunger, especially if it seems like you have no idea just how close it is to their dinner time! When they are not able to use their words to tell us just how hungry they are, they have to get creative with their communication and hope that you understand. A hungry pup may paw at your legs when they are ready to eat, along with a possible nudge of their food bowl.

While this dinner time reminder can seem harmless, try your best to not create a food demanding monster. Some dogs have perfected the art of begging for treats by using pawing and scratching for communication. If your pup uses demanding tactics when they are craving their favorite treat, it may be time to consider a new routine for snack time.

They’re Directing Your Pets

If your dog starts pawing at you when you’re petting them, they could be trying to direct you to the “sweet spot!” Don’t take it as your dog trying to command you.

As long as they aren’t barking or showing signs of aggression, the pawing is merely a suggestion.

They love your pets so much that they want you to pet elsewhere!

Why Your Dog Puts Its Paw On Your Face

Why Do Dogs Give Paw?

Below are a number of reasons why your dog might have been doing it and what would make them more likely to be the main reason.

It wants something from you

The cause could be that it is trying to get something from you. This would be more likely if it tends to do it more when you are eating or at around the same time that you would normally give it something such as food.

Boredom

The cause could be that it is bored and wants exercise. This would be more likely if it tends to do it more before getting exercise and it stops doing it after getting exercise. If it is healthy, it would help to ensure that your dog is able to get the daily amount of recommended exercise for its age and breed.

Encouraging the behavior

It might also be the case that you have inadvertently encouraged the behavior by rewarding it. This would be more likely if you tend to give it things such as toys, treats or extra attention when it puts its paw on you. Instead, it would help to reward it when it behaves the way you want and to try to redirect its focus when it is about to put its paw on your face.

Its trying to alert you to something

The cause could be that it wants to alert you to something. This would be more likely if it does it at the same time that things happen such as when there is an unusual noise nearby and if it shows unusual body language when it does it.

It wants you to stop

They Are Food Obsessed

This breed is motivated by food, this can be both good and bad. Being motivated by food makes them easier to train. A golden will pretty much do anything for a treat. The bad part is that they will eat anything and everything, and youll need to watch their food intake because this breed is prone to obesity.

There have been plenty of times when I have walked my Ellie, and she has picked up and eaten some very questionable stuff. Its not that I am letting her eat stuff off the ground, its that she is so quick, and eats it. Walking a food-motivated dog can be frustrating at times.

Dogs Put Their Paw On You Because They Are Hungry

Some people dont believe that dogs have a great internal clock, but somehow my pooch seems to remember what time his dinner is. I cant explain it but he comes into the living room and stares at me profusely, I look at the time, and yep bang-on dinner time.

Because dogs see us using our hands so much they probably have a tendency to use their own. We communicate with our hands more than we raise and your dog is doing the same thing. If your dog puts their paw on you, take a look at the time and you may find it is their dinner time. Another great reason for getting your attention.

If you are in a situation like me, you need to ask yourself some hard questions.

It may not be worth getting a Lab puppy if it is going to cause serious discussions in your home. In my situation, I just walk gently in those moments when my wife gets fed up. Eventually, it blows over and life moves on. If you are unable to tuck your tail a little and walk gently, I dont think the dog is worth it.

Why Your Dog Puts Their Paw On Their Face

If your dog puts their paw on themselves, it could be their attempt to avoid your gaze or hide their face.

They may feel guilty for something they did, or they simply recognize you as the superior one in the pack. Its a holdover from when their ancestors lived in the wild.

You see, their body language tells a lot about how they see you.

Its not always about their behaviors like obeying on command or walking properly on a leash. Sometimes, its the little things like the way they subtly cover their face with a paw.

However, do not mistake fear for submissiveness. Your dog should still be comfortable and happy around you while being respectful and obedient.

Your dog may be putting their paw on their face because they feel safer that way, especially when they pair it with other gestures like going to their bed or crate for comfort.

Help a fearful dog by remaining calm and relaxed all the time. They will pick up on your behavior and want to imitate it.

You also dont want to force them to face their fears. Instead, use positive reinforcement techniques to show them what good behavior looks like.

Pawing could be a learned experience, says Dr. Andrea Y. Tu, DVM, Medical Director ofBehavior Vets of New York. Dogs may repeat the kind action because they have learned it will draw your attention.
