What Is A Skin Rash

Golden Retriever Skin Issues

Similar to human rash, dog rash can be very discomforting to the point your dog is going to suffer from excessive itching which can lead to possible skin infection and open wound if it continues to persist. One of the most common angles to look at as to why the dogs are having rashes is allergies. Besides bowel irregularities, rashes are one of the common responses if the pet kibble is not compatible with the dogs diet.

Sometimes, the causes are flea bites which can irritate the skin of the dog. But most often its the result of allergies coming from foods such as wheat, corn, chicken, dairy, beef, and yeast. Also, it can be from chemical components or added preservatives and fillers from his kibble food.

Rashes and other simple skin conditions are fairly common health issues in golden retrievers. The fact that their thick coat makes them vulnerable to various conditions. That said, if rashes become worse and didnt heal quickly using relief or treatment, its much preferred to let your dog be seen by a veterinarian. With this, the vet may be able to detect whats the reason beneath the rash on the belly.

There are breeds that are very vulnerable to allergies which can eventually lead to a rash. These breeds are Golden Retriever, English Bulldog, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Hairless Terrier, Cocker Spaniel, Maltese, German Sheperd, and Bull Terrier.

Dog Skin Allergies: Canine Atopic Dermatitis

    Written bySmall Door’s medical experts

Like humans, dogs are susceptible to developing allergies such as atopic dermatitis. If a dog has atopic dermatitis, the immune system reacts too strongly to common environmental allergens that are absorbed through the skin such as mold spores, dust mites, and grass. These irritants become absorbed more easily due to a dysfunction in the skin barrier, which decreases resistance to secondary infections.

    Treatment For Hot Spots

    Dermacton Reviews

If you suspect your dog may have a hot spot, the first step is a visit to your veterinarian. While it may be tempting to wait for the hot spot to resolve on its own, delaying treatment will only make the problem worse. In order to treat the hot spot effectively and prevent it from recurring, your veterinarian will need to determine the underlying cause. They will perform a full physical examination on your dog, and may recommend additional testing such as a skin scrape to look for parasites. Once the underlying cause of your dogs itching has been diagnosed, your veterinarian will prescribe appropriate treatment.

Treatment of hot spots typically involves some combination of the following:

    • Excessive scratching, biting or licking on skin
    • Watery eyes
    • Sneezing
    • Breathing issues

Fortunately, there are ways to help boost your dogs immune system and decrease the effects of allergies. Omega fatty acids are a major benefit in the fight against allergies and degenerative disorders that can cause inflammation and arthritis. Some research has shown that Omegas can even prevent allergies from developing in puppies. While every dog is different, there is no argument that your pup could benefit from Omega fatty acids. But heres the catchdogs cant produce Omegas on their own, so they must get them somewhere else.

Recovery And Management Of Atopic Dermatitis In Dogs

Atopic dermatitis is a lifelong condition, and will not resolve on its own, which is why its necessary to manage your dogs environment and stay on top of daily health routines, including diet, clean living space, and weekly baths to remove any allergens that have attached themselves to the skin.

Once treatment begins, frequent visits to the veterinarian are necessary to determine how well your dog is responding. Some treatments work better than others, so it may involve some initial trial and error to find the one that works best. The goal is to have the least amount of side effects in the long term, and still allow for a good quality of life. As the symptoms start to subside, veterinary visits will become less frequent, but checkups are still needed to ensure your pups health.

What To Do About Dull Coats And Skin Problems In Golden Retrievers

    Itchy golden retriever

On a recent visit to my vet, I asked if there were something I could do to help, and the vet asked if I gave the dogs an Omega supplement. I explained that I gave the dogs a high-quality dog kibble that claimed to have a balance of nutrients, including Omega-3 fatty acids.

This is where I learned my first mistake.

My vet explained how dog food, even though it claims to contain Omega-3, rarely has any fatty acids that are biologically available to dogs. Biologically available? I had to have my vet expand on that one. Apparently, when dog food is processed, it is exposed to high heat. Omega fatty acids just so happen to be very sensitive to high heat. So by the time you pour Fido a bowl of kibble, the essential fatty acids are no longer in a state that is beneficial to your dog. In addition to dry, itchy skin and unhealthy coats, I was told that Omega-3 deficient diets also lead to:

    • Prolonged healing of wounds

    • Hot spots

    • Excessive itching

Fortunately, my vet offered a solution. She recommended that I start my dogs on an Omega-3 fatty acid supplement. Sounds easy? Not so much.

I also learned that all supplements are not created equal. The ingredients that are used to derive the fatty acids is key. I think most people know that salmon is high in Omega-3s, but did you know that its also high in toxins, such as lead and mercury?

Common Symptoms Of Golden Retriever Skin Allergies

If ever you have noticed some of these allergy symptoms. Get the most attention that your golden retriever needs and also if it becomes worse, you should probably consult your local veterinarian.

    Swollen Face

A goldie with a swollen may look cute. But its not. It could be critical or a reaction from acute allergy. Sometimes its most likely a sting or an insect bite. But in some cases, the swollen face is a result of inhaled allergen such as pollen particles. That said, goldies with snout have the possibility to become anaphylactic shock although unlikely it is common. Symptoms like these can be dangerous and you should contact your vet right away if you have some lingering thoughts about it.

    Itchy ears

Golden retrievers with itchy ears are usually an early stage of ear infection. It might be an ear mite that is slowly building up and likely to infest. But the early stages are not alarming. It will only come to your attention when your goldie is increasingly irritated by their continuous scratching and occasionally tilt their head out of irritation. This can be prevented through regular ear cleaning especially the ear canal and the base of the ear. But if the situation is under control, contact your vet for further treatment.

Frequently skin chewing or paw licking

I was recently turned on to an amazing product called Omega-3 Select chews. They are made from the highest quality anchovies , designed to provide your pup with the perfect balance of essential oils. Plus, theyre available in small and large chews depending on your dogs size.

Within a few weeks of having my dogs take the chews, I began noticing that they werent itching as much and their coats looked shiny and healthy. These were just the benefits that I could see.

Using Immunotherapy To Treat Skin Allergies

    Seasonal Allergies in Your Dog
  • 1Ask your vet how immunotherapy works. Immunotherapy, also called Allergen Specific Immunotherapy , is usually the best choice for treating CAD. It can help your Golden Retriever achieve remission without the use of other medications . ASIT works by gradually desensitizing your dogs immune system to the allergens causing the CAD.XResearch source The immunotherapy medicine, commonly given by injection, contains small amounts of the specific allergens to which your Golden Retriever is allergic.
  • By exposing your Golden Retriever to small, measured amounts of the allergens , your dogs immune system would slowly become more tolerant of the allergens over time, therefore lessening the allergic reaction.XResearch source
  • Results of the skin tests your vet performed to diagnose CAD would indicate the specific allergens.
  • Immunotherapy is most helpful for dogs that have skin allergies for longer than two to three months at a time and have not responded well to other skin allergy medications. It is a lifelong treatment.
  • 2Have your vet perform the immunotherapy injections. Immunotherapy injections are usually given about once every one to four weeks. Your vet will let you know how often your Golden Retriever will need the injections. It may help to schedule several appointments at one time to make sure your dog receives stays on schedule with the treatment.

    Common Golden Retriever Skin Allergies

    1. Atopic Dermatitis

Among the common skin allergies that are affecting every canine breed is atopic dermatitis. But it is more likely to develop in breeds such as Poodles, Cocker Spaniels, Bulldogs, and Golden Retrievers/ This condition is often due to pollens and other inhaled protein particles. As a result, this leads to hypersensitivity.

Sometimes it is induced from an indoor or an environmental allergen. When golden retrievers have this, they may experience intense itching which affects the face, abdomen, and feet. As well as rhinitis, asthma, conjunctivitis. There are also few cases that some dog breeds experienced discoloration of the coat due to atopy or atopic dermatitis.

Unfortunately, atopic dermatitis is incurable but it has readily treatment to alleviate its worsening condition. If this condition becomes worse, your goldie might affect its behavior leading to aggressive behavior and even shy away from people.

    2. Flea allergies

Another everyday struggle and most debilitating to the golden retrievers are fleas. They are the usual suspect why some goldies are itching excessively to the point that they feel very irritated. Flea allergies are rampant especially when its midsummer to fall, and in warmer climates, it can be year-round.

    Treatment For Skin Problems

At the first sign of damaged skin or foul-smelling ears, take your golden to her vet. Skin conditions may appear mild, but can indicate serious whole-body illness. Once your vet identifies the problem, treatment may range from flea control or medicated baths to prescription medication. Skin conditions such as serious staph outbreaks are treated with medicated shampoos to fight the bacteria on the skin and antibiotics to fight it inside the body. Even when the cause is not identified, most skin conditions can be treated to make the dog comfortable and reduce complications. Ichthyosis, though an unsightly skin problem, rarely requires medical treatment in a golden retriever.

The Problem: Dogs Cant Produce Vital Omega Fatty Acids

    COMMON ALLERGIES FOR GOLDEN RETRIEVER

There are many sources of essential Omega fatty acids. Some mistakenly believe that dog food delivers all your dog needs. Unfortunately, because Omegas are susceptible to heat, most of the benefits become biologically unavailable to your dog due to the cooking/treatment temperatures of dog food.

Thats why I personally give my dog an Omega supplement. They really seem to like the Omega-3 Select chews from Project Paws. I like them because theyre made from anchovies and krill, which have some of the highest concentrations of Omegas of any fish. Because these are small fish with a shorter lifespan, they dont contain the high level of toxins like other large fish like Salmon. The other reason I love them is because each purchase of Omega-3 Select chews provides meals for up to 21 shelter dogs.

Its important to remember that this is a marathon, not a sprint. It may takes weeks or even several months for your dog to feel the benefits of an Omega supplement. Talk to your vet, and find out if Omega fatty acid supplementationmight be a part of an holistic plan to support your golden retrievers immune system and fight allergies.

What Ingredients In Dogs Food Causes Allergies

The most common culprits are proteins found in dairy products, beef, chicken, chicken eggs, gluten, lamb.

Wheat, corn, soy and other grains can also trigger allergic reaction. These grains are heavily sprayed with products, like Round Up, that are known to cause all sorts of problems to humans and animals.

Bad quality dog food is another important part of the problem. Driven by the possibility of quick and easy profit some producers are offering cheap and easily affordable dog food to the market.

This food is often full of added chemicals, artificial colors and flavors and will cause all sorts of problems to you and your dog in the long run.

% Of Hot Spots Are Due To Allergies

Has the pet had skin or ear problems before? Is the Hot Spot seasonal? Are fleas present?? The affected areas will appear red and wet. It can be the size of a dime to the size of a basketball depending on how much self mutilization has occurred. Usually hairloss is noted and can be very painful for your pet.
