What is an English cream golden retriever?

An English cream golden retriever is a golden retriever descended from an English line with a light-colored coat. This breed is not officially recognized by any kennel club, which means that many breeders may claim to offer English cream golden retrievers for sale without much oversight. However, all English cream golden retrievers can still technically be registered as regular golden retrievers, so be sure to ask for pedigree information before making your purchase.

What is the difference between a golden retriever and an English cream golden retriever?

Although all golden retrievers are of English origin, deviations in American and British kennel club standards have resulted in two recognizable bloodlines. English golden retrievers tend to have rounder eyes, wider heads, stockier builds, and in some cases, lighter coats. The casual term English cream golden retriever typically refers to an English golden retriever with a particularly light coat of fur however, its worth noting that responsible breeders select for health rather than coat color.

English Vs American Golden Retriever Overview

Before we get into the differences and similarities of these two types of goldens, its important to know why were even having this discussion in the first place.

Isnt a golden retriever a golden retriever no matter where it comes from?

Well, sort of

In the mid-1800s, golden retrievers were first bred in Scotland by crossing a Tweed water spaniel and a wavy-coated retriever.

Sir Dudley Marjoribanks created the breed to retrieve gunned down birds in fields and marshes.

Obviously, they made it over here to America, but then some differences started to evolve.

Heres why:

  • The fact that North America and Europe are different continents separated by a big pond caused dogs on these continents to mostly breed with just each other.
  • The AKC and Kennel Club actually have slightly different breed standards, so breeders trying to adhere to these standards prioritized different things.
  • Different qualities were preferred by breeders who bred for different purposes , so they produced dogs with noticeable differences.
  • So yes, a golden retriever is a golden retriever, but depending on where it comes from and what the breeders purpose was, you will find differences between them.

However, what these differences are, and how pronounced they are, depends on who you ask.

If you ask an English Cream golden retriever breeder, theyll tell you that English Creams are healthier and calmer.

And to muddy the waters even further most English golden retrievers arent even from England.

Dangers Of Stunted Or Accelerated Growth

Not all Golden Retrievers will grow to the same size and at the same rate. The size of the parents is always a good indicator of whether your Golden will be above or below average in size. However, while natural variation is nothing to worry about, stunted growth or accelerated growth is.

If a Golden Retriever puppy is malnourished or suffering from an unidentified medical condition, usually hookworm or ringworm, their natural growth can be compromised. This can lead to serious medical issues in later life, as it can leave then with weak bones, weak muscles, and a weak immune system, as well as a tendency to develop both skin and digestive issues.

Growing too quickly, largely as a result of over feeding, can also pose a major health risk. As well as leading to obesity, carrying too much weight at the development stage can leave your golden retriever with skeletal abnormalities, hip dysplasia, and osteochondrosis, a condition that affects the joints.

How Big Do English Cream Golden Retrievers Get

between 20-24 inches tallEnglish cream golden retrievers are medium-sized dogs with fluffy coats of light golden fur. Most English creams weigh between 45-75 pounds and stand between 20-24 inches tall. Male golden retrievers are usually taller and heavier than their female counterparts, but the difference is not extreme.

    Lifespan And Hereditary Concerns

Statistics seem to indicate that the paler coated English Cream dogs of the breed live anywhere from six months to two years longer than the darker coated dogs. However, there is no hard evidence to suggest that this tendency is absolute, or that it will continue. Most of the lighter colored retrievers bred in the UK live around 12 years, while the darker coated dogs bred in America tend to live for 10 to 11 years.

Another tendency, according to some sources, that seems to show up more in the darker coated dogs is a risk for Lymphosarcoma, a cancer that affects blood cells and lymphoid tissues. Cream colored retrievers seem to have around a 38% chance of developing cancer, and the darker golden coated dogs, on average, seem to have a 60% chance. However, it should be noted that these risks are averages based upon known records, and individual dogs will have different tendencies based on specific bloodlines. Again, these tendencies should not be seen as absolutes.

Other common concerns for this breed include hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. These genetic conditions, common among many large dog breeds, are caused by malformation of the joints. In some cases, dysplasia may result as a secondary condition from obesity. These conditions can generally be managed with medication. Another disease that affects the joints, Osteochondritis Dissecans, is common in Golden Retrievers as well.

English Cream Golden Retriever Vs American Golden Retriever

As I touched on earlier, the white retriever is simply a different type of golden retriever.

Since they are essentially the same breed, there truly isnt very much difference between an English cream golden retriever and an American golden retriever. In general, they will have the same temperament and exercise requirements. They will both shed profusely and will need similar amounts of mental stimulation.

However, there are still a few key differences that are worth noting here. The largest and most obvious one is appearance. Instead of having a yellow-toned coat color, the white retriever has, as you might imagine, a cream-toned white coat. There can be some shading variation within this category, but not very much.

There are also some other physical differences. These include blockier, broader heads, bigger bones, and darker skin than traditional goldens. The white retriever variation has a more rounded eye shape, whereas traditional goldens have darker, more almond-shaped eyes.

There is also a slight difference between the two in terms of size. The breed standard states that male English cream golden retrievers should be from 22 to 24 inches tall, while females are between 20 and 22 inches tall. On the other hand, the breed standard for traditional golden retrievers states that males should be 22 to 23 inches in height, while females are anywhere from 21.5 to 22.5 inches tall.

Origin Of English Cream Golden Retriever

The English Cream Golden Retriever was first bred in North America. The ancestors of this breed Golden Retrievers from different locations like Scandinavia, Australia, and New Zealand.

The American Kennel Club doesnt accept the cream colored Golden Retrievers as this breed does not fit AKCs three coat color standards of light golden, dark golden and golden.

On the other hand, the UK Kennel Club recognized the English Cream Golden Retriever since 1936.

Owners and breeders are attracted to the lighter coat color of the English Cream Golden Retriever. The UK Kennel Club and American Kennel Club maintain strict standards for show dogs.

Dog shows outside of the US recognize the English Cream Golden Retriever.

This is why this breed is more common outside of the US and why the UK Kennel Club accepts the cream color as a shade.

The color of the coat doesnt distract judges from the characteristics of the dogs being assessed.

In the US, cream-colored retrievers are penalized in dog shows if they dont meet the standard of rich, glossy, different shades of golden.

Personality: Are English Cream Golden Retrievers More Mellow

Yes. Typically, English Cream Retrievers are calmer than their American counterparts, but that doesnt mean they have lower activity levels, especially as a young pup. But overall, theyre easier to train.

In general, Golden Retrievers are known for having that puppy-like trait throughout their life, but English Cream Goldens are said to mature faster, especially when a lot of time and attention is placed into training and socialization.

That doesnt mean they need less attention and love. No matter what type of Goldie it is, theyll always look for affection, like when it comes to scary things, like escalators:

All Golden Retrievers are kind, loving, and great with children. Theyre extremely affectionate and gentle. For these reasons, theyre known to be great therapy and service dogs.

These social pupper-flies are great with other dogs and cats even if introduced later in life. They are a very patient breed and tend to get along with all people and pets.

Unfortunately, their social nature makes them susceptible to social anxiety. Theyd rather always have someone with which to engage.

Like what we mentioned earlier, English Cream Golden Retrievers are highly trainable. Theyre intelligent, loyal, and are eager to please their owners.

Youll be able to quickly teach your pup commands like Sit, Stay, and Come. With positive reinforcement and a few treats, almost nothing is impossible with this breed.

How Much Is A White Golden Retriever

The cost of a white golden retriever depends on many factors, including the breeder, location, supply and demand in your area, and the puppys pedigree. Sometimes, you may even be able to find goldens that are up for adoption for $500 or less. However, as a very popular breed, any goldens that are put for adoption usually quickly find their forever homes.

While adoption is much cheaper than buying from a breeder, you are unlikely to find a purebred dog this way. This is especially true of English cream golden retrievers, which are just beginning to become popular in the US.

If you decide to look for a breeder of cream-colored golden retrievers in the US, youll have a hard time getting conformation papers for white golden retriever puppies, since their color is currently frowned upon by the American Kennel Club. As a result, many breeders are registering their golden retrievers that are white under the light golden category, which isnt accurate.

Having said that, white goldens from ethical breeders will cost a pretty penny! Quality breeders take great pride in their work and go to great lengths to ensure the health and longevity of their golden retrievers. These dogs will have multiple health checks and veterinary visits before they even come to your home.

Because of this, you can expect to pay anywhere from $1,500 to $2,500 for a white golden retriever.
